Jon Miller had an excellent on-air essay this morning about the state of Iowa men's basketball program. If you missed it, I would encourage you to listen to it here: Des Moines' Sports Station - 1460 KXNO
Jon put into touching, human words what many of us have been feeling about the direction of the program. Based on the poor level of play and the lopsided margins of loss the past several weeks, many of us, including now Jon, believe it is time for a change.
While this message board has been on fire with posts with positive reactions to Jon's comments and a general sense that it is time for change, let me suggest these will soon become cool-to-the-touch embers. Members of this board, and others who support the idea of competitive basketball being played in Carver Hawekeye Arena, need to go beyond posting anonyous comments on this site. I can guarantee that Gary Barta does not log in to this site daily or look at the myriad of sites devoted to Iowa athletics. Nor does UI President Sally Mason. I even doubt whether UI SID Phil Haddy pays much attention.
To make your feelings and desires known, let me call HaweyeNation to action as follows:
1) Contact Barta directly and let him know this level of talent and play in the Iowa men's basketball program is unacceptable. You will not attend a game or otherwise contribute to the program until changes are made. Netiquette precludes me from posting his contact information here but enter the words "gary barta email" in Google and take it from there. Be nice, be respectable. Let him know in no uncertain terms you expect more from the men's basketball program than you've seen from Todd Lickliter. You may also wish to call him or send him a letter at the postal address provided.
2) Even if thousands of Iowa fans follow through with No. 1, it is doubtful Barta will act. Sometimes a quick swat with a rolled-up newspaper will get the attention of even the most stubborn of mules. Contact major UI athletics department donors directly. Directors of athletics such as Barta pay little attention to the little people (see Jamie Pollard letter to ISU fan unhappy with McDermott's extension.) Major donors, on the other hand, have the ear of the AD. If you know donors to the Iowa department of athletics, call them or send them an e-mail. If you don't know anyone who opens their wallets or checkbooks to Iowa sports, Google "Iowa athletics donor.")
Flames are fine. But lets put heat behind the effort to bring in a new leader for the Iowa men's basketball progam.
