Purdue

Purdue is getting hammered by VCU, the infamous team that should have never gotten into the tournament. I can't believe how disinterested the Purdue team looks tonight, especially JaJuan Johnson, who is just sleepwalking out there. Coach Painter doesn't seem to have any answers to get them motivated to make a comeback. Quite the shock!

VCU looks to be quite athletic. I was surprised how athletic they were while watching them play in their postseason conference tournament.

Purdue just looks slow as hell. VCU has hung 94 points on Purdue.

I don't know what happened to Purdue. They were the hottest team in the country for a while, then for whatever reason they suddenly stunk it up 3 of their last 4 games.

Barkely is going off on the Big East getting 11 teams in the tourney, using VCU as an example of how more teams should have got in from the smaller conferences. Pitino looks like he wants to punch Chuck in the face.

Purdue got run out of the gym tonight by a much quicker team. That PG for VCU is going to cause headaches for whoever has to try and stop him.

Have a lot of respect for Painter, but something about his body language suggests this may have been a difficult yr and not his favorite coaching experience. I seem to remember him being much more animated and interactive w/ his players.

Usually I'd tell Barkley to STFU, but in this case he's right. The Big East is HUGELY overrated. At least when ESPN hypes up the SEC, it usually gets backed up in the bowls and the NCG. But 11 (9 if we don't count the loser of the Big East matchups) Big East teams in, and 6 (It's not fair to count the two that exit because they had to play another Big East team) are out at the end of the first weekend. Notre Dame is by 11 right now to Florida State, and Syracuse could very easily get knocked out next weekend by UNC. Just think about that: Syracuse and UCONN might be the only two BE teams to make the Sweet Sixteen. Out of 11 teams, 9 of which were at least a #6 seed. That would be downright embarrassing.

Syracuse got beat by Marquette.

I'm sorry but it is March Madness. Crap happens to good teams. To say that the big east shouldn't have had 11 in and VCU's conference should have 2 more or whatever is ridiculous. I think the big east earned 11. The 11th team in was Marquette and they made the sweet 16. It's march madness things happen. If ND loses to FSU in teh regular season oh well it's one game, but it's march madness, it happens. One game changes everything. give me a break.

I don't have a problem with the Big East getting 11 teams, I have a problem with how terribly overseeded they were. The conference has been overrated all season. Yet a win over an extremely average Georgetown, or St John's or Villanova is viewed as much more impressive than a win over an equally good Penn St team. The Big East benefits greatly from the brand name schools in conference, and the media blowing the conference nonstop for three months. Well they've now flamed out of the NCAA tournament in impressive fasion two years in a row.

Elite-8 and Final-4 appearances mark a conference's strength....not making the tourney.

I won't argue with this. I think the issue is that wanting more VCUs etc. Well I think they should play more B10, Big East, ACC teams at the beginning of the year. If they played in those conferences all year who knows how'd they fair. I'm just saying I'm not upset when the BigEast gets 11 or the B10 gets 7 teams in. I agree the seeds are kind of crazy, but hey that's life in the NCAA.

I disagree completely. It's about individual match ups. Do you really think that if the MWC gets a couple of teams in the Elite 8 then that means their whole conference is better than the Big East? I could see arguing that those MWC teams are just as good if not better than most Big East teams. But I think it's too simplistic to try and generalize an entire conference's strengths based on a couple of teams.

The same thing applies for bowl games in football.

So would you argue that the Big East had 9 bad matchups? The tournament is a much better way to judge a conference than the bowl games. Bowl games are put together based on many factors, including conference affiliation, fan following, ticket sales, etc. The tournament is supposed to be seeded based on how good your team is. Your conference's tournament record is a pretty good reflection of how good your conference was for that year. Everyone knows the MWC was a top heavy league with two very good teams, they've proven that to be true. The Big East is not a super conference like it's made out to be, it's a good conference with a lot of pretty average teams that was overrated all year.

Purdue was exposed a bit late in the year vs Iowa,MSU and VCU. Outside of Smith,Moore and Johnson, they did not have any good shooters. Smith was dinged in practice this week,so he was not all there.
Guys like DJ Bryd,Barlow(when he was not suspended),LewJack,Bade, ect could not shoot the ball.
The teams that advance seem to have lots of different guys that can hit shots from the arc. As Pitino said, this is an offensive tourny, this year.
Purdue needed Hummel to make a serious run...he gave them everything they lacked...shooting,rebounding and interior defense.
