I watched a bit of video from the PTL and here are a few thoughts. Granted, it's based on only a few minutes of video, but tape doesn't lie.
I was impressed w/ Devon Archie's footwork in a game I believe he was going against Mel. Devon made a nice up-and-under post move. Mel blocked the shot but Dev got the Off Board and made a reverse layup. You could tell that the coaches have worked w/ Devon on his back-to-the-basket game. If you watch players' feet, you can really tell a lot about them.
Melsahn showed a nice mid-range turnaround jumper once where he squared up really well. However, he also shot a turnaround where his body wasn't square and thus he more or less threw the ball up. Mel had a scoring play in the lane but he used the wrong hand. It should have been a little left hand jump hook and he shot it with his right. Against better/taller/more athletic competition that shot will get blocked.
Hubbard impressed me in a few areas. I was pleased with his quickness/speed with the ball in one transition instance. Quicker than I thought. Also, he's a unique player as he has a post's body but he has some quicks. Didn't see much shooting from him, but he has nice arc on his FT's. Could follow through a bit more as he short-arms them a bit.
Gatens had a few sweet strokes for 3 and I was most impressed with a 3pt shot fake, one dribble, pull up that he made. He needs to add that mid-range game/threat. A healthy Matt could be the difference in postseason play next year as he really came on defensively.
I am excited to get Oglesby into the program. I have seen some previous video of him and I think he'll become a terrific passer as he has nice vision and he feeds the post very well with a quick/strong 2 hand overhead pass. That takes some strength so he seems to be sneaky strong. Josh moves without the ball well as evidenced from his backcut for a layup. That's been taught to him, but it takes bb IQ to understand when/how. I think he'll knock down many transition 3's during his career. Looks more complete than a Kent McCausland.
Finally, Zach McCabe intrigues me. Love his hustle. Not sure where he'll play and even his minutes. I'd love for him to be a poor man's Brian Cardinal. They're similar in build and mentality. Zach isn't in that category yet, but I see similarities in their game.
It sounds like Marble has had a great PTL. He does have a few times where he puts his head down and dribble, dribble, dribbles until he shoots/scores. We need an aggressive player like that (Bryce can get his own shot), but that mentality is a decent thing to have. You can't really do that much in organized basketball, but Marble seems like he's working and learning a great deal.
Sorry if this seems random. I love everything about Fran. I'm ecstatic to have Hawkeye basketball back. I grew up on the 80's teams and bb has always been my #1. However, Iowa fb has taken over that spot in my heart. Hawkeye hoops will regain that, I think. Go Hawks!
