PSU - what is the key?

I watched much of their game today. Little of what I saw today worries me for next week. I know that's nuts - it's PSU... there is plenty to be worried about. If they play like they did 2 weeks ago at Bama it's going to be a dogfight.

That being said, Bolden (sp?) looked really raw today. Royster is ok, but i've never been super-impressed. Their defense is solid but not great. Middle of the pack BT defense IMO.

I believe that pressure on Bolden and playing focused will get us through.

In other words... if our D-line does what it does best, Royster won't be much of a factor and Bolden will have little time. If we don't shoot ourselves in the foot with penalties and special teams miscues, I think we win comfortably. PSU is a good team and it would be a solid win. Let's get it done and start of the BT season right. That way we can rest up going up to Ann Arbor.

I don't give a crap what Michigan has done against all of these horrible teams they are playing (yes, ND is on that list.) Racking up crap yards against cupcakes means nothing to me... especially when it's a RichRod team... he's the KING of that ****. Who cares? Weren't they 4-0 last year too? How did that work out?

The key is scoring more points than they do...

As long as we don't give up the big play and win the field position battle per special teams, I think we should win. Turnovers hurt us against Arizona, we dug ourselves a hole and it took everything we had to come back but we didn't have enough to pull it out in the end. We need to avoid falling behind.

I just don't see Royster doing anything against us. So unless we turn it over 3 times or Robert Bolden doesn't go all Joe Montana on us, I think we'll be fine.

They just seem to be a bunch of blue collar guys - like us, but not as good. And they don't really have any playmakers from what I can tell... whereas we have a number of them. I really think they are going to crash back to earth now that their pre-conference portion is done. I see them going 4-4 or 5-3 in the Big Ten. Gotta whip a team like them the way that we should.

When Bolden sees MD, AC and CB about to eat his lunch, i think that he may LOSE his.

I think we win next week by at least 13 points. I have not been impressed with PSU this year so far. True freshman QB in Kinnick against our D-line = bad things for PSU and good things for the Hawks.

As long as we don't have a repeat of the Arizona miscues, we should win comfortably.

1. Stop Royster. 2. No big PSU special teams plays. 3. No outrageous penalties. That Equals making a frosh QB beat us under the lights in our house. Done.

Bolden got rushed and spend a good amount of time on the turf today. The key is to get in his face and force him to make bad decisions, and then capitalize on them.

We need Kinnick to be noisy and hostile and make a freshman QB play like a freshman. I think that will happen.

Iowa 17-7

Good one. Way to add to the discussion.

Well if you wanted a more complete breakdown, here you go.

What I have learned over the last 10 years are the keys for Iowa to beating Penn State.
1. Show up, that usually helps.
2. Get out to an insurmountable lead... then win in overtime
3. Don't start Jake Christensen at QB
4. Let Penn State score on opening play, lull PSU into false sense of security.
5. Trick Penn State into thinking this is a basketball game, take away 3 point shot, only allow 2 pointers.
6. Don't rush the punter... block it anyways
7. Allow Penn State fans to wear white after labor day
8. Tim Dwight... See.... You.... Later
9. Make questionable diving TD catch, infuriating Joe Pa to where he is solely focused on running down official after the game.
10. Ultimately score more points than PSU does.

Ok - now that's GOOD stuff! :)

They are a lot like us so you have to beat them at their own game. Starts with tough defense and not giving up big plays, keep the receivers (who are not a bad bunch) in front of you. Limit the running game and tackle well. On offense, limit turnovers to zero if possible, as few as possible otherwise. You have to play sound football and limit mistakes. I think we are physically superior to them overall this year. Don't let the mistakes beat us like they did against AZ.

Next week will be a tough one. Penn St. is always a good team and I think they were looking ahead today. They'll be ready. My biggest fear is the kicking game. It hasn't been this bad since the '97 Wisky and NWestern games.

Iowa needs to tackle better.

And, as is the case any time we face PSU ... we need to be able to take away their running game.

If we can take away their running game ... then it will likely be a defensive dogfight.

I think that they're going to be coming into Kinnick hungry to make a statement.
