Proposed Western Division

If the reports are correct (and Purdue is our cross-over), our only "marquee" games are Michigan and Nebraska, and Michigan has been down of late. Makes for a pretty lame home schedule assuming one of these games is on the road. Compare to this year where we play OSU, Mich, PSU and Wisc. in the same year. For a program that can use as much visibility as it can get (tv) even if only for recruiting purposes, I see only the Neb game as having much national appeal until Mich rights the ship. We might do well to improve our out of conference scheduling and hope that Wisconsin comes back to our division at some point.

That said, I'll take it. I don't know that we could have expected much better.

Dude. We are eventually going to a nine game conference schedule. We will actually pick up an extra conference game. Basically, it will be the same it is now. Just we will be assured to play more certain teams every year and get a chance for a conference championship.

Iowa will still play 2 other non-division teams each year, other than the protected rival. So, the Hawks should pick up one more strong team on the schedule. Then, in 2015 with 9 conference games, Wisc/Iowa will be back on the protected as each team should get 2.

Dude - got it. In two years we'll be more assured to play more certain teams (and not play more certain teams). Yep, pretty much the same.

Thanks - I forgot about the other two games.

I am so thankful we are in the West. Iowa/Nebraska every year, going to be epic!!! Not sure how anyone could think the NW game is lame since they beat us every year it seems. Michigan is Michigan no matter what and they are a sleeping giant so we need to enjoy the wins we get while they last as no way they are down much longer....

No. You don't get it.

In 2006 and 2007 UM, and OSU were off our schedule. That will not be able to happen in the future as UM will NOT be off our schedule. Now, can OSU be off our schedule? Sure. But not any more than two years running which was the same as 2006, and 2007.

So we are not going to be in a position where we only have 2 marquee games. We will most likely play at least three of the top four in any one year.

Now, you could say that you don't want to always play Minny and NW. But is that worse than Indiana and Illinois?

They broke up the leagues for competitive balance, which also means good games.

Could Purdue and Iowa say "no thanks" to their manufactred rivalry, and just rotate more teams through the schedule from the opposite division?

Probably wouldn't work mathematically.

Really, I do. See my response to DFACE
