Projecting Aaron White & his place in Iowa Hoops history

This sort of thing is purely for entertainment....

White has played 45 games at Iowa. Say we give Iowa its regular season compliment of 31 games, plus one in the Big Ten tourney and one in another post season tourney the rest of his career..those are safe estimates that may be exceeded by four to six games, but lets go with this.

45 games so far: 530 points and 264 rebounds. Divide those totals by 45 to get averages of:

Pts: 11.78
Rebs: 5.87

23 more games this year and 66 more for his junior and senior seasons for a total of 89, plus the 45 he has played to get 134 games. Take 134 times those averages to get a career totals of:

Points: 1,578
Rebounds: 787

OK..those numbers are assuming that White would actually regress from where he is right now (14ppg/nearly 7reb/game) for the remaining 89 games of his career. Unlikely...but even if that happened, he'd finish tied with Adam Haluska for 8th all time in scoring at Iowa and he be 7 rebounds away from Don Nelson's career total of 784 which is 10th all time at Iowa.

Now, lets take what his current averages are, project those for the remaining 89 games of his career and add them to the present 45 games he has played and see what those numbers look like:

Points: 1,785
Rebounds: 843

Again, that is assuming that what White has averaged this season is as good as it will get for him in points per game (14.1) and rebounds per game (6.5) the rest of his career. That's more than safe, barring injury. The points total would put him at 2nd all time in scoring, ahead of Acie Earl by 6 points (Roy Marble is #1 at 2116) and 6th all time in rebounds, ahead of everyone but Greg Brunner (990), Kevin Kunnert, Ed Horton (877), Micheal Payne (857) and Bruce King (852).

If he stays healthy, he will likely leave Iowa as its #2 scorer ever and he has a shot at the #2 rebounder ever (Kunnert's 914) but certainly Ed Horton's #3 slot of 877.

If he did that, he'd likely earn a spot on Iowa's all time starting five.

He is a good kid, someone who wasn't highly regarded or heavily recruited and proved that recruiting services make mistakes. I for one am truly glad he is at Iowa. He seems to fit Fran's system really well. One of the announcers said the other day that he was one of the best players he has ever seen at drawing fouls to get to the free throw line. That plus the fact that he is an extremely consistent free throw shooter makes for excellent offensive numbers. I love how he isn't scared to get down and fight for rebounds either.

By the time he is done at Iowa is will be an all-time Iowa great even if he isn't one of the most flashy players. Although the dude can throw down a dunk like nobody's business.
 
Remember when we did this for Basabe after his freshmen year? I'm hoping White continues to get better and puts up big numbers but Basabe's case reminded me to not count your chickens before they hatch. But it's always fun to look at the what if numbers.

2 different mentalities in these 2 players, however. Not saying White's numbers will get better, but I don't think he will just disappear at times like Basabe has.

True but I still think Melshan is a great team player as well. He is still one of my favorites even if he is only coming off the bench he seems to play his best that way. Maybe less stress to perform, I don't know but he is getting the most out of minutes better now.

Plus I think White is a better all around player than Melshan is, he brings multiple skill sets, he can post up, hit the mid range shot as well as threes and free throws. Melshan is just a post up guy, yes his mid range is getting better but not enough to be a real threat for more than 1-2 baskets a game from there.

Yeah me too. I love watching Basabe play when he gets things going. He'll be a big part of our program the rest of his career.

Yeah was one of the few bright spots his freshman year, Basabe was the first real proof Fran was starting to bring this program back from the abyss that Lickliter had drowned it in.

I just hope that he keeps it up and is able to stay healthy and we will continue to help build this program back up.

Yes, I recall that..and its even more about entertainment for the freshmen...but White has a full year and 1/3 of his soph season under his belt. the longer we go here, the more real these numbers get
 
As Iowa gets more guys who can score White's scoring average might flatten out or even go down. Some of those guys may already be here but have not shown the consistent scoring, some may be in our future (Peter Jok for example). White could continue to get better but not have it show up in his numbers.

I don't think this would apply quite as much to the rebounds but it might.
 
It's already apparent that White is not going to have a sophomore slump like Basabe did. As someone said, different mentalities. White appears to be a driven player who has something to prove to all of those that overlooked him in the past. Even as Coach McCaffery gathers more talent to surround him, I would be surprised if his averages don't increase every year. Barring injury, he is going to put up some big numbers.
 
We are fortunate to have both Aaron and Mel on the team......

Along with many others. We have the nucleus of a very good team in the making......

Love Aaron White, my favorite Hawkeye, and he is bad news for the opponent......

Mel is playing very well this season and wiil get better in my opinion......

Good OP Jan. I kid I kid, no ban hammer. Finishing as a top five scorer and rebounder would be quite an accomplishment. He plays hard. He could do it.

Unfortunately he's right and it all ends a week from today? Anyone know exactly what time the world is ending. I ended up taking the day off work, because I'll be damned if I'm going out in my office sitting behind a desk doing paperwork, that said knowing the exact time would help me greatly so I can figure out what to do with my precious time that fateful day.
 
Last I heard there was another calendar found so the 12/21 date is not the end anymore. Seriously. That's what I was told. Regardless, it's coming to an end soon.
