Prediction: Mike Daniels 2011 = AC 2009

We all know the guy is a freak, but watching his interviews and reading the things he says he seems to be a guy that "gets it." I really think he is going to have a monster year to ease the suffering of losing guys like AC, Klug, and Ballard the same way AC did to ease the pain of losing King and Kroul.

I would not be surprised at all to see him go higher in the draft than AC does this year.
 












I love Daniels, but I see there being little chance for him having a better draft status than Clayborn. Daniels simply doesn't have the size at DT that NFL teams covet ... nor would he be viewed as being tall enough to project well at DE. Like many former Iowa DTs, he'll be caught being perceived as a "tweener." That being said ... NFL teams will love him when they interview him. Furthermore, he's going to get a great recommendation from Parker and Ferentz ... and that will mean something too.
 


You may be right homer, I didn't actually know his size. 6'1" isn't ideal, but he is still gonna turn heads. I just looked up stats (and I know they don't tell the whole story)

AC his soph year had 50 tackles, 8 TFL, 2 sacks.
Daniels last year had 40 tackles, 11 TFL, and 4 sacks.

I stick by my prediction.

If Daniels can go out with a Babs-like SR campaign ... then he could definitely end up "blowing up" on draft boards.

What is particularly striking about the TFL/sack production of Daniels ... almost all of it was compiled in the first half of the season.

After Iowa's LB corps decided to immitate a triage unit ... all of a sudden, the DL TFL/sack production became "surprisingly" quiet.
 


I watched a lot of Iowa's games last year and Daniels really stood out to me. He could have a big time season.
 


The question is how will md do with OL focusing on him rather than him getting 1-on-1 match-ups. He will get no less than a double team on every snap. I think he is good but it is harder for a dt to dominate than for a de.

Honestly, I think the key to Daniels production is whether the other DT can be successful. I'll go out on a limb and say Carl Davis is the blow up player of 2011. I've heard nothing but good things about this guy.

When Ferentz says we almost pulled his redshirt last year, you know he's got to be ready. I know that could reflect our thinness at DT last year, but I'd like to think that Davis is ready. If they devote two men to Daniels, Davis has a field day. It's hard to block a 310lb guy who can move with one man.

If you have to put two men on Davis, Daniels eats you alive. I'm liking the thought of this defense more and more. I know they will struggle and give up points early, but I think these guys will improve significantly throughout the season. There is alot of speed in the back seven also. I think they are going to be fun to watch.
