PR and KR

You mean Sandeman on punt return. Sash makes sense on potential fakes. But you don't put one of your key cogs of your defense at a spot where he is at that kind of risk.

Particularly when Sandeman developed into a very efficient punt returner and he's a senior back-up.

People write off Sandeman because he doesn't have blazing speed, but he is good with the ball in his hands in the open field. He'll be on punts, and Chaney was returning punts before he got injured so I would assume he would be the primary back-up.

DJK is by far the best KR we have, so he is the primary guy. One of Davis, Chaney, Johnson if doesn't RS, seems like a likely candidate on the other side.

Sandeman is solid as hell ......

a good kid who brings his heart onto the play and busts *** on every down

I think the only way Chaney gets serious action is at kick returns...might be the only way to use his speed....but with the Iowa defense teams arent scoring many points to get kickoffs

I will guess DJK and K Davis/Chaney on KO ret

and Sandeman most likely on PR

DOn't like Sash back there on PR .....he is capable but he is too important and we don't have much behind him right now to have him running kicks back

Sandeman is very solid doing PR, though I don't expect to return any for TD's. But he maintains possession of the ball, which matters more than anything else. For a long time I wished they'd use someone more explosive, but I'm more than happy just having someone back there that doesn't fumble or muff punts.

For KR, DJK and Wegher were great last year, but you'd have to think Chaney would be fantastic back there. I know K. Davis was back there, too, but don't think he ever actually got any returns. I'm curious about Jordan Cotton, also, and think he and Chaney could make a hell of a duo, if nothing else b/c DJK is a very valuable WR, and that would save him some potential hits.

Pretty sure you'll see Sandeman at PR to start the season and get most of the returns. I think Cotton will be 2nd string.

As for KR, I think DJK will be used but not all the time. They'll probably pick their spots with him. You'll probably see Cotton, Davis, Cheney back their as well.

I think if we end up pulling the shirt off D. Johnson he would be a good option back there.

Sandeman at PR

I don't like the idea of DJK back there.

Sash was a pretty good punt returner last year against Iowa State, some of Arnaud's punts were terrible, it looked like he was kicking with his hand.

I think we had Spievey listed back there at punt returner for a game or two last season...so that kinda throws the whole "too important" card out the window. I think this was before Hyde got a lot of run at CB and after Lowe and Castillo looked questionable in their opportunities (memory somewhat fuzzy here). I simply remember asking myself why the staff would put someone so critical as a returner on the suicide squads.

Spievey was back there because Cheney was out for the season and Sandeman was out with his concussion. Once Sandeman was ready to go, he was back there again.

Right. But there were a couple posts that suggested Sash wouldn't be back there because he's "too important" to the defense. I merely pointed out that last year, when our CB depth was green and largely untested, they put Spievey back on the return team. When you've got true freshman as your backup CB's, in my mind, you don't put your Thorpe candidate back on the punt return team. But the staff blew that out of the water by putting him back there, so Sash could just as easily be back there this year.

That only means that the staff won't hesitate to put a guy like that back if there is no other good option. With both Sandeman and Chaney back this year, I highly doubt that we'll see Sash back returning kicks. If Sandeman and Chaney both get hurt, then sure. But they will protect a guy like Sash as long as they can afford to.

Sandeman needs to stop letting punts hit the ground and roll for 20 yards so often.

He does let a lot of balls bounce and roll, but that is because he is a ball control punt returner. He is not running full speed to catch up to a ball to try and make a play. He is catching punts he can catch and being cautious with the ball. He picks the punts he catches very carefully, if it is a low linedrive that he is going to struggle to get to, he let's it go and those are usually the ones that roll for 20 yards.
I like how he plays back there, as a previous poster said he is not going to break many for TDs, but he is also not going to fumble or make mistakes very often.
It's similar to what the offense thinks. We have a heck of a defense and it would be a whole lot tougher for an opposing offense to take the ball 80 yards to score than it would be to take it 20 and score after a turnover.

Iowa lost a ton of field position last year from him not fielding punts. And Im not talking low line drives..plenty of high ones never got caught either.
