Power Rankings, who do you got?

1. Ohio St Top of the class still.

2. Wisconsin Beat up Michigan. Tough, but not a lot of games under the belt.

3. Indiana Their best year in decades

4. Iowa Looked like their season was over after first 2 games. Team looked lost. But only lost by a combined 5 points in those games. Iowa has destroyed its last 2 opponents. Iowa looks good right now. Unlike Michigan, Penn St, and Minny....Iowa is appearing to pull its head out of its ass. I think they would beat Northwestern and Purdue in a rematch. QB throws like Nolan Ryan, but has the accuracy of Jake, Nate, James, McCann, Ruddock, etc.

5. Northwestern Unbeaten and getting it done. Unbeaten record likely coming to an end next week.

6. Maryland They have that Alabama transfer QB.

7. Purdue They are ok. Got by a hot-mess Iowa in week 1.

8. Nebraska Like Iowa, I would put them as the team 2nd most improving. But, don't think they are there yet when playing a team of consequence.

9. Penn St They are a hot mess.

10. Michigan Even more of a hot mess.

11. Minny Junior High Defense.

12. Illinois Best of the worse.

13. Rutgers Who Cares

14. Michigan St LOL

Indiana looks more impressive each week but the teams they have beaten are looking less impressive each week.

NW has beaten better teams than Indiana has.

Interesting thing

ILL beat Rut
Rut beat MSU
MSU beat Mich
Mich beat Minny
Minny beat ILL

And that's the only victory each team has. Take away that 1 victory and none of those teams have done squat. I am putting those 5 teams below a winless PSU, who I think is better than all of them

1. OSU
2. Wisc
3. NW
4. Indy
5. Iowa
6. Pur
7. MD
8. Neb
9. PSU
10. Mich
11. Minn
12. ILL
13. Rut
14. MSU

Northwestern is the real deal. If Purdue gets Moore back, they are gonna be a tough out as well. I'd probably put Iowa 6th and caveat that everything from 7 down is probably the worst Big Ten football I've ever seen.

Iowa is 6th, I cant rank them above Northwestern or Purdue since they lost to both of them. Especially Northwestern, they are a solid 4th.

Iowa destroyed its last 2 opponents but did they really beat anyone?
To quote 8 million posts on Hawkeye Nation, “You have to beat the teams you are supposed to beat.”

Sure but in a power ratings is who've they've beaten the past 2 weeks justify putting them 4th, especially over Northwestern?

And to quote Ric Flair, "To be the man, you have to beat the man, WOOOOOOO." Fitz is the man and Kurt's record against Fitz is nothing short of dismal.

I guess I look at Power Rankings as how the teams are playing now. I think Iowa would beat Northwestern and Purdue...maybe like a drum if we played now.

It is Ohio St. and everybody else. The gap seems to be getting larger by the year. The rest of it doesn't matter especially this year. As OK4P pointed out the bottom third of this conference is dogshit.

It basically describes KF's tenure at Iowa it is not about figuring it out later, it is about figuring it out in the moment. All they needed was a split in the first two games and they put up an 0'fer.

Want to see something amazing? Check out Sagarin's ratings, it's pretty eye opening.

He ranks divisions as individual conferences. The #1 and #2 conferences in the country? Yup, you guessed it:

1. Big Ten West
2. Big Ten East

Now get a load of the individual team rankings (number on far left is their national ranking - x 2) - I've combined West/East because, like many/most I suspect, I still think of it as one Big Ten:

1. Ohio State
3. Wisconsin
6. Iowa
10. Northwestern
12. Indiana
20. Purdue
21. Penn State
22. Michigan
28. Nebraska
33. Minnesota
43. Maryland
59. Michigan State
73. Illinois
75. Rutgers

Those are numbers more typical of what we've seen in the SEC in recent years. Per these rankings, our apparent "mediocre" teams are actually pretty good and our apparent "bad" teams would be tough outs in many other conferences.

As exciting as this looks, I do think you probably need to apply a little skepticism in this year in particular. For one thing, we've hardly had any (if any at all?) inter-conference play. For another thing, you have Big Ten teams with 2 to 4 games under their belt, whereas you have teams in other conferences that are 8 games in. So, if we give the Big Ten a few more weeks to beat up on each other and these rankings may drop...but I plan to enjoy it while it lasts. \

This. They all count and when we had our chance... we couldn't beat either of those teams. You are what your record says you are.

I generally like Sagarin's system but there are times when its flaws are glaring. This is one of those times.

How do you rationalize an 0-4 team ranked #21? This is why your inner skeptic should be on alert any time you hear the phrase "computer models".

“Ladies, you can’t be the first but all of you can be next wooooooooo!”

It's all very interesting but we will know how good we are when we play Penn State and Wisconsin. It all comes down to can Petras win us a game or play well enough when our rushing game is shutdown.

Well, at the risk of sounding like a smartass, you rationalize ranking an 0-4 team #21 by seeing that they've played the 2nd toughest schedule in the country. :)

Humans have bigger flaws I think - like for example ranking "brand name" teams in the top 10 for being undefeated even though they haven't beaten anyone of consequence.

Luckily, the games aren't played by computers OR pollsters!

Second toughest schedule in the nation or not, they're still 0-4. Regardless of whether they are decent or not it's still 0-4. There's no such thing as a weighted loss because a team lost to a good or decent team. If they end the season with 4 losses to quality teams and they play the 2nd toughest schedule in the country I could justify them being ranked, in a "normal" 12 game season, but not after 4 games.

Lets not forget we always laughed at ISU when they used their SOS to justify their win loss record. It didn't work for them either.

I'm not saying Coastal Carolina or Liberty or Cincinnati is better than Iowa, but I think that if we had a non-con schedule and drawn one of those teams for the first game, there's a really good chance we would have lost.
