potential realignment idea

I was listening to the HN realignment podcast, and I was thinking about another potential alternative to the old Big 10 division model. I am not sure I would support either plan, but I just throwing this out there for discussion.

The division Iowa would be in would be based around the old Wiufu conference. So it would start with all the original members; Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska. Add to that instate rivals Iowa State and Kansas State. Then grow to the north and west by adding Minnesota, Colorado, and Wyoming.

This would mean a division with 9 members. That works great for the schedule especially in football. Play all 8 teams and have 4 non conference games each year. That offers great flexibility. In basketball play each team twice for 16 games, and that's a good number too.

The state legislature requires ISU to be on the schedule so might as well have them be in the same division. The only member that I really don't like to have in there is Missouri because of the unsportsmanlike conduct of their team and fans the last times the teams played regular season games, however I hope that this can be resolved. I think the west match ups would be fun ones.

I have been getting frustrated with the Big 10 for sometime now. So maybe it would be a good idea to have another option on the table. What are your thoughts?

So you'd have Iowa play all the teams in their division, but never play any cross-division games? Uhm, no thanks. I'd like a shot at PSU, tOSU, Michigan, etc. from time-to-time.

Other teams would be played in the 4 non division games. This would actually give Iowa more flexibility than they have now. Iowa has the legislature mandated game against the clowns, and starting in 2016 it is down to 3 non conference games, having to play the clowns reduces the flexible opponent games to 2. This doubles that.

On a side note, I believe that when the non conference schedule is reduced to 3 games that Iowa should only schedule the clowns once every 4 years.

OK, but your original post said 4 non-conference games. The other division would still be in-conference, so it seemed you meant we'd never play anyone in the other division.

I am not sure about all of the realignment plan, but it seemed to me like they were talking about a maga conference. This conference have regional divisions. Iowa would play every team in the division once a year, and chose non division games largely as they do now.

The plan on the podcast had Iowa in a division with the pre Pedo State Big 10 teams. That would leave 3 non division games, 1 of those being taken up by the clowns every year.

My idea is to simply change around the divisions. Move Iowa and Minnesota in with the teams from the west. Then maybe move Notre Dame and Pittsburgh into the Big 10 division.

At least if ISU is added we would never have to worry about finishing last in our division during football season.
