I found this tweet interesting:

So Iowa has 3rd best yardage offense of KF era, total D rank of 21 and scoring D rank of 33 and sits 7-4...disconnect somwhere

I think the disconnect is turnovers, and much like 2010, the defense is playing well for the most part but the lack of experience at linebacker rears it's ugly head on third downs.

Losing the 3 LBS we had was huge, even bigger than I thought it would be.

1 game made this season seem much worse, isu. Maybe MD as well, but only because we screwed up a 14 point lead.

Saying the offense is the 3rd best yardage in KF era is misleading, as offensive numbers have been steadily creeping up every year of his tenure.

Scoring offense is 78th in the country, yardage 66th.

Running their 305 points scored and 251 allowed through a baseball pythagorean calculator gives you an expected record of.... 7-4.

There isn't a disconnect.

pythag (I couldn't find a football version, just articles about it being applicable to football):

Yet Wiscy can replace their front 7 and lead the nation in defense? Everyone loses players to graduation. Need to recruit better.

Probably true, but hard to replace 3 very good (2 NFL level), multi year starting, LBS in one season.

We can always recruit harder, but again, player development and avoiding huge dropoffs will always be the key. Depth will always, Always be an issue at Iowa. One "miss" in development or unexpected attrition hurts for a couple years.

That said, again, I think most, including the coaches, thought Alston would be better and allow time for the young LBS to develop.

Wisky is well ahead of us in talent and depth, and a lot more capable of "reloading ", currently.

Part of the problem is we play way too often not to lose, not to win. Difference between the first and second half Sat.

This is what is incredibly frustrating about this season. The offense is good, and has talent, but lack any kind of consistency at all. I think that comes from two things: 1) Greg Davis and terribly inconsistent play calling. 2) Playing JR, and having at times to limit the play calling.

I think this team and offense would be light years better right now if KF would have stuck with CJ after the Purdue game (not saying JR hasn't play good at times, and he played a hell of a game on Saturday). I just think the offense could actually run the ball with him at QB, because he opens up the entire field from snap 1.

does he really, or is that just what you think happens?

what I'm getting at is do that stats back this claim up? When Jon looked into it earlier in the year much to his surprise I'm sure, the claim wasn't backed up by the facts.

You've got two games to look at where CJ played significant time. Was the ypc any better with him?

No, the rushing stats did not get any better with CJ at the controls. In fact, they went down a smidge, but thats just random variation from game to game.

Well getting off the field on 3rd downs was certainly the key in this Wisky game. If they could have gotten off the field just one more time against them in the 2nd half it'd have been interesting to see how it plays out. You could just see the relief on Andersons face right after the game. His D didn't play like they normally had been. The what ifs for this season just keep piling up...
