Yes, there is a different Kirk this year.

You can't make the argument that 2015 Ferentz and 2016 Ferentz are the same, because then you're arguing against human nature.

Everyone and their grandma (at least in my field) knows that contract incentives (explicitly or implicitly) influence behavior. It comes from something deeply ingrained in human subconscious, it doesn't necessarily have to be a conscious choice to act differently.

If you don't think that incentives (particularly contractual incentives) influence behavior, then why do we have performance standards in contracts? Why do we have tax incentives in the tax code? Answer: to influence peoples' behavior.

2015 Ferentz was a much different specimen than 2016 Ferentz because his incentives dramatically changed when the ink dried on the contract.

This isn't me talking out of my ass, this is an empiric, economic fact.

Also, your poll is confusing. The title of the thread and the title of the poll lead to different conclusions.

Okay, I fixed my silly poll. Now go ahead and vote. Trust me, you'll feel better afterwards knowing at least you voted once between now and Wednesday.;)

Kirk slowly slipped to his old ways as the season went on last year. By the end of last year, Old Kirk was completely back.

I voted No, but I think "New Kirk" was more myth than reality.

CJ making enough plays in the first few games to get the team confident, some key turnovers, better o-line / receivers / safety play, and pure momentum were all more important to 12-0.

KF was less of a liability, but not THAT much less.

This. same coach. last year we had the Pitt kick, confidence, a better overall oline, and a qb that extended dozens of plays/drives with his feet. the more I see, the more I think even more conservative playcalling is trying to make up for CJ having lost a step and not nearly as comfortable running.

I saw a season throw chart that shows only about 12 total passes beyond 20 yards, we've completed half....3 for touchdowns...but refuse to keep doing it.....baffling.

Yep, this is correct. I don't get why people want to think that "New Kirk". Was he here in '02-'04, then in half of '08 and all of '09 and '15 then as well?

Kirk is a lock for the college football HOF. Most of you don't see that.

In the years to come, please hang on to this "New Kirk 3.0" idea. I'll always enjoy the chuckle.

Maybe the biggest baffle is that we keep noticing this and talking about it. Our border collie will stand and stare at a ball for 10 minutes thinking someone will pick it up and throw it her. She doesn't get it but is hopeful.

Completely agree with this. Kirk was different at the beginning of the year for sure tho. Our wins were more about momentum than anything else tho.

Kirk came into the season with renued energy, changed up the offense a bit, and took more chances. It was easy to see. That was New Kirk. He even talked about making an effort to change in the off season. I think people exaggerate in their own head what they think New Kirk means to the people who say it.

KF knew that he needed to coach and have a good year or he was done at Iowa last year. So that's what he did(this means he can be a great coach if he HAS to be). Then with a new contract that takes him to the age of 70, well past retirement, there is no motivation for him to try. Yes there are miniscule incentives for good years but the bulk of his salary is guaranteed no matter what. There is no motivation to acheive and over achieve. I saw a portion of his Penn State postgame. I found it very interesting. The way he talked(words and tone) he was shocked that the game was so bad for Iowa. He guenuinely looked dumbfounded that this happened. This indicates to me that he has no idea what the players are feeling or are like or what the team chemistry is like this year. He is also out of touch with play calling on offense, everyone knows he has about 7 plays and thats it. How could he be so blind. 6 weeks prior he was beaten by a Div. 2 team. He lost to Northwestern at home. The Wisconsin loss was understandable. KF is out of touch with the reality of what shape the Iowa program is in now. There should be a smaller base salary for coaches. Then incentives for milestones and great seasons. Make them work for their money. Riches can destroy some people.

The voting indicates that most people recognize that Kirk has taken up some old bad habits that he at least temporarily avoided for most of 2015.

I promise this board, that if the contract was still being negotiated right now he wouldn't be as stubborn. And 86.43% of you know that's the truth.

Good work.

Last year he beat 2 ranked teams on the road. This year he can't beat any ranked teams. Last year's schedule was easy. But the first 6 games this year were easier than the first 6 games last year, and guess what, 6-0 versus 4-2. Last year's team wouldn't have lost to NDSU.

Traditional Stubborn Kirk = needless losses and 5-4

Not as stubborn Kirk = 12-2

Seems like a CNN poll. You do know you have to get DNC approval first before posting this, right?

You "promise" that if a hypothetical-but-clearly-not-happening-anytime-soon-scenario was happening, someone you don't personally know would act a certain way??

"I do not think it means, what you think it means".
