Please Help Fred Barr if You Can

Wow, how terrible. I loved watching Fred, he was a very good player. Not that it makes a big difference, but you have to wonder if the football could have anything to do with the condition.

The donor list reads like a who's who of late 90s, early 00s Iowa football. Good to see the guys looking out for one another.

Is he still in the Des Moines area? I thought that's where I'd seen he was a few years ago anyway. Looks like they'll hit their 35k goal so that's awesome. Hopefully he can get above and beyond that too.

Things like this tear me up. Not only for him and what he's going through but to see how so many people care. The guy just drew a bad hand at this game of life. Not that money will fix everything but at least it can hopefully help.

Looks like donations are over $50k at this point and the goal was $36k. Hawk fans are the best.

Looked this disease up and read a little about it, and it sounds fucking brutal.

It also sounds like something that usually doesn’t completely go away and people have to manage instead of cure. I had a good friend from high school with a condition that caused really bad vertigo and nausea to come and go, and he was told the same thing, that they wouldn’t be able to cure it, just manage it. He finally got sick of living that way and took himself out.

In no way am I suggesting Fred Barr would do something like that to his family, just saying that these things suck and they take a toll on mental health too. I hope Fred gets some relief soon and it’s awesome to see Hawk players and fans stepping up.

I visited Fred last night in his hotel. It was great to see him.

He's still dealing with pain and recovery but is much better off than before the surgery. He's in good spirits and wants everyone to know he can't thank them enough for the support.

Similar in some ways to the illness that derailed Kenny Arnold and eventually took his life.

When former teammates found out that 1) he was sick and 2) it was exacerbated by insurance preventing him from getting the proper meds, they rallied and called on Hawkeye fans for support.

Kenny wasn't without proper meds much longer. It probably doubled his eventual lifespan.

Thanks for the update.
