Players who have surprised you this year

On defense, gotta go with Ott and Hardy and King.

On offense, gota think about it ...

I guess Rudock has played better than I would have guessed and all the TE's have made nice contributions. I can't comment on OLine = its just a big scrum and I don't really know what I'm looking at except obvious plays. Both full backs - LOL can't even name them :)

Guys who have not contributed as I hoped; CJF,

This may be a weird one to many but... James Morris.

I always felt like he was a good kid but didn't think he was deserving of the praise for his play that he often got...

This year he has been beastly.

King is first and foremost.

The entire d line unit is better than I thought.

Jake duzey has emerged as our best TE in my opinon and I would like them to play kittle more which we started to see today.

Jake ruddock is better than I anticipated. He's a smart football player and has a terrific pocket presence.

Matt Vandeberg, he was a true freshman walk on before the start of the season. Now he has turned into a sure handed receiver. Throw to him more!

Morris, Morris, and Morris. Kid is having a hell of a year. Ott and Hardy have really shown me something the last 3 weeks or so.

Hitchens - reacting quicker and hitting harder

Bullock - his blitz pick up has been great for the most part

LTP - creating a lot of havoc and doesn't give up on plays

LTP for sure on D. He just lives in opponents backfields. So disruptive.

Gotta be Ruddock on O. Maybe Duzey.

Surprised guys are so pleased with Rudock. Is this because Vandy had such a terrible year last season that the bar was very low?

He did look pretty good in the non-con games, but how many passes over 15 yards has he completed the whole season? He's staring at his primary receiver, throwing mostly very short passes and missed plenty of guys running open down field.

I was much more excited about him after 4-5 games than I am now. Now I pine for dual option Beathard.

Love what King is doing, Cannzari maybe, LB's and D-line stepping up. Defense overall has been better than expected other than a blown coverage or two most games that costs us 6 points.

Not false on Vandeberg.

Hawkeye freshman made quick move to Iowa City, onto the depth chart
Matt VandeBerg Steps into College Football - Iowa Official Athletic Site

"The original plan for the native of Brandon, S.D. was to join the program for the spring semester. But when a scholarship became available for the fall, he jumped at the opportunity."

He was a grey shirt prior to the season, a scholarship became available he took it. You also see in the article that he is a true freshman. Also see here about his play.

"As a receiver he has done some good things," said Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, following VandeBerg's first game action as a Hawkeye. "He's not the biggest guy in the world, but he'll grow as we go along. He's really practiced well and made some good catches. He tries to block, and he does what he's supposed to do. He's really picked things up quickly."

He has 7 receptions for 59 yards.

Defensive line in general. I thought they had potential, I guess really is credit the coaches that have been doing DLine by committee for once.

Jake Ruddock & Kittle. Kittle I thought was a waste of an offer, kid is already contributing which is very shocking. Jake being so much better than James Vandenberg is also impressing.

Guys who have not contributed as I hoped; CJF,

Des King, James Morris, Jake Rudock and, the last few games, Don Shumpert.

Not surprised by any of the RBs, as I think all have certain amount of talent and competitiveness.

I'm going a different direction. Weisman is slightly a disappointment. He's got 700+ yards and I woulda hoped 1200 range by now.

Draper, Shumpert, Hernandez.
???? Not sure what you are saying here......... shumpert surprised me the last few games actually hanging on to the ball( early season drops did not surprise me). Draper had a bad game, but he's young and we haven't seen much of him.
King is very impressive. Jury is still out on rudock. I am surprised we couldn't find at least one decent safety. Cox and Plewa have been great run blockers and catching passes.
