Players who emerge next year

My top 3 candidates:

1. Jeff Tarpinian - He made a lot of big special teams hits (especially the kickoff return licking he put on the Michigan dude!!) and I think he steps into a starting role and flourishes next year

2. Jordan Bernstine - If he can put together a fully healthy season, I think he has the ability to be an All Conference type of player - I think he will step up and make the loss of Spievey seem less painful.

3. Keenan Davis - I really think he has the tools to become a stud WR and I think he will be featured more in the offense, even with DJK, McNutt and Sandeman getting the majority of the looks. I think he has a chance to make an impact on special teams returns as well.

Tarp is a beast. It'll be interesting to see if he can harness that fury and unload on Clay from Wisky. Aggressive, but hopefully plays smart, like Edds and Angerer did.
Also Bernstine is a heck of an athlete, shame that injuries have plagued him thusfar.

I didn't think Tarp had a very good game against OSU, but I agree, he is as violent of a hitter as we have seen.

I would love if we could keep him on kickoff as well. It seemed as though he made the tackle on every kickoff.

He didn't; he was responsible for backside contain on Saines long touchdown.

I have liked Troy Johnson since the day he signed, and he verified my excitement with his one start. I think he has a breakout season, but I wouldn't bet on it. It is amazing that Iowa will lose two studs like Angerer and Edds, and probably by game 2-3 not miss a beat at LB. Johnson, although I think he could be great, could also be the #4 guy because there is so much talent at linebacker.

I also think there will be an OL that will emerge much the way Reiff did this year.

I'm really hoping its Keenan Davis. I like Sandeman just fine but would really like to see the younger, bigger, more athletic Davis playing along side McDJK.

Not sure who, but sure hope it's in the OL and/or LB areas... those are the areas we'll need to shore up.

I'm not sold on Tarp being a starting LB next year. He has never caught my attention in a good way when he is on defense.

By "emerge" I think it could go either way -- surprisingly competent or the glaring weakness. I hope its the former but have a feeling it will be both.

On defense, I'll go with Nielsen (replacing Edds) -- recall comments that he's just as athletic (which really separated Edds from others because of his coverage skills).

Also on defense, Bruce Davis. Won't miss a beat in the run game but will be noticeable in the speed / coverage situations.

On offense, I think it will be whoever is slotted at RT. I predict a big, nasty Jonathan Gimm will get it done, becoming another successful TE to tackle convert.

I feel good about our linebackers coming up but Tarp is about 4th on the list behind Johnson, Nielsen and Davis. I wouldn't be surprised if Tillison can compete for time as well. I love Tarp on ST but he has scared me more on D than he has impressed me.

He could have big year. He will be a starter, prob. the number 2 backer on the team right now.

Tarp isn't even going to start. Johnson and Neilson will get the starting spots. Tarp will keep playing the 4th linebacker spot like he has been playing and Gattas played previously.

#2. I guess I've never got the 'hype' around Bernstine. I hope he emerges as well, but I think All Conference is a high expectation to have for him, IMO, given he's not even played the position (CB).

We really, really need about 3 or 4 OL to EMERGE next fall!

The key to our success is in the trenches and with the losses of Bulaga, Raf, Dace and Calloway we lose a lot of experience. Plus Doering.

Reiff started like 11 games this yr at diff positions. Vandevelde has started quite a few games over past couple of seasons (24 to be exact). JV tore a pec muscle. Adam Gettis has 1 start.

We need guys like Woody Orne, James Ferentz/Koeppel, Zusevics, MacMillian, Gettis and McMillian emerge.
