Players That Have Left The Team Before 2014 Season

I'm looking forward to the season, but hate seeing the attrition that takes place. I know it happens in college athletics for whatever reason and hopefully it doesn't hurt the Hawks in the future.

The following players that left from what I've I read are as follows:

QB Cody Sokol--Transferred to Louisiana Tech

RB Barkley Hill--Transferred to UNI

RB Michael Malloy--???

RB Markel Smith--Going to same prep school that produced Greene & Russell

WR Blake Haluska--Shoulder injury ending career

WR A.J. Jones--Brother, Jyaz, changed commitment to CSU

DB Ruben Lile--Closer to home

DB Nico Law--Recent trouble in Iowa City with assault

I don't know if any of these players would've made an impact this season, but it's sad to see them leave.

Sokol will get his chance at a school that needed a QB.

Hill was projected as a starter until season-ending injury & falling on the depth chart.

Malloy has been in-and-out of program with a variety of things.

Smith will get back on track at prep school with academics & hopefully back as a Hawk.

Haluska will rehab shoulder injury & get degree.

Jones may end up joining his brother since he decommited from CSU originally.

Lile will play closer to home.

Law will wind up somewhere & will be missed as a Hawk.

Anyone else I'm missing?

If you'll remember, part of the reason Iowa stopped recruiting Jyaz Jones was because of academics. He didn't end up qualifying and will be at Kilgore College, a juco in Texas, this year. I'm not actually sure where AJ Jones has ended up.

Attrition can actually be a healthy thing. Now a few years ago when our DL was decimated because nobody wanted to play for the tool coaching at Nebraska now, that was bad attrition. The above, well, that's good attrition. Other than Smith, Haluska, and Law, the others are leaving because better players were ahead of them on the depth chart. It's expected and acceptable.

So I take it Alden Haffar is still with the team and in the mix for the starting job right?

Alden has moved on and no longer with the team. The team is down to Marshall and the two ture Freshman kickers. Odd move by this staff IMO. Would have kept Marshall Alden and the new recruit from TX. Hawks are one pulled hamstring away from a true freshman kicking for a team that has a chance to be 10-2.

In a sense, Law could be lumped into the depth chart group. Lots of people were excited to see him move up the depth chart, but he wasn't able to make that last step to starter. The arrest isn't enough to have kicked him off the team. The real reason he left probably has more to do with his not being able to pass Lowdermilk.

Nationwide you are going to see more non-qualifiers with the 2016 recruiting class. You are going to see more freshman not eligible to practice or only be able to practice because they do not meet the standard to play their first year.

Eight of South Carolina's 21 incoming players from the 2013 class are in danger of non-qualifying due to academics. It's pretty clear, academic discovery isn't a part of their process. Figuring out a way to get them on campus is the number one priority for their recruiting efforts. That being said, I'm sure they never cheat. I heard tell that the SEC done relaxed some of them learnin' rules.
