Players Leaving

What's the deal with all the players leaving the team this season..

This really cant be a good sign for future recruits if all of these guys are bolting on the team.

Hell Austin Gray didnt even go to class..

I was so homesick my first semester at college I transfered. Sometimes life just happens. I never read too much into it. It always happens more with football because they have a large team.

2 left for personal reasons and 1 for academic reasons, I doubt it is a concern of recruits because it isn't like the coaching staff ran these guys off.

I am guessing you work at an office...with fellow employees. Any of them ever leave for another job for a variety of reasons?

I would say it means we are recruiting better - in that our 2 or 3 deep feel that they are good enough to play elsewhere and not sit behind others. If we have beter talent in the queue, they may not always want to wait for thier "turn".

I wouldn't read too much into it. Wegher and Gray left for personal reasons and Hundtermark wants to focus on academics. He probably figured he wouldn't see the field much this season, probably isn't going to the NFL, and wants to focus on the next phase of his life.

If we had a spate of guys leaving because they didn't get along with coaches I'd be much more concerned.

The three posts above, starting with Jon's. You hate to see anyone leave who you think is contributing, but they do, from football programs, companies jobs, membership groups, even your circle of friends.

without saying toooo much - two of them have at least one 'gf' 'opportunity' (for lack of better word). that would be a lot to handle, above and beyond what these guys face as young 18 and 19 year olds. And i would concur with someone above - it is hard enough for most just going to college and leaving the nest for the first time.

Sometimes I think people underestimate just how much time and effort it requires to play football at Iowa. If are a starter or have a legitimate hope at starting in the future, its probably worth it. But when a guy has put in 3 or 4 years of hard work, hasn't seen the field, and doesn't believe he is going to start before his eligibility is up it would awfully hard to go through the intense grind of division 1 football.

If your heart is not in it, and it would be hard to have your heart in it if you don't think your ever going to play, it would be impossible to play football and go through that grind.

agreed. hard enough for many or most to do just school. it's like going to school full time and having a full-time job on top of it. these individuals have to have it TOGETHER in all phases of their life to make it work.

This is a non-issue. These types of departures are very common accross the board in college athletics, and as Jon said, in life. Nothing to see here.

i just got a little concerned with the basketball team going through what it went through with players leaving left and right.. i was just hoping the football team didnt catch that sickness too... i understand Wegher's reasons.. i didnt know Gray left for personal reasons.. and congrats to Hundtermark for seeing the bigger picture in life...

and Jon. i have never set foot in an office al la the traditional form im sure you speak of.. i am the head grounds keeper for a small university

On one of the boards somebody posted a list of players lost each of the last few years and this year isn't any different than the others. I think we focus on it more because of the expectations and we wonder why anybody would want to leave a team of this caliber.
