Player ratings (based upon actual play)

Watching the game today surely wasn't much fun. We still have guys dribbling around with no sense of urgency even trailing by 5 with a minute left. 7th graders in Iowa have better court awareness. If I were picking my team based upon actual play, not potential... it would go like this.

1. May
2. Cole
3. McCabe (biggest surprise)
------------------ acceptable level required to win games.
4. Brommer (most improved)
5. Marble
6. Cartwright
7. Payne
8. Basabe
9. Stoermer

Key notes:
-Basabe was surprisingly bad. He played slower than a tortoise on valium. It looked like he was hustling, but those South Dakota kids would just zip right by. He has obviously never seen a midwestern head fake. He was out of place and he knew it. You could tell by the look of concern on his face... or he was hung over, or constipated.
-McCabe looked great for a kid playing his first collegiate game as a freshman. He will grow into a solid player soon, but had more glimpses of being a good freshman than being solid today. He will catch up with the game.
-Cartwright... looked frustrated and was very ineffective. I don't understand how he was a scorer out west but didn't look like he even knew which way the basket was many times today.
-Payne... looked worse than Cartwright and sat on the bench for quite a while in the second half... kept looking at the coach like "here I am?"
-Marble... looked concerned with stats over the win-loss column. Surely needs time to develop... but has a GREAT upside. Still confused about Basabe.
-Cole... Just a great man for putting up with this for so long and not giving up... he will go a long way in life in whatever it is he ends up doing.

Pretty fair assessment

It seemed to me that the players were trying to play too fast and that led to a lot of dumb/unneccessary turnovers. Its going to be a long season and I am hoping that these young guys can continue to improve

Agreed on Cole, May, and McCabe (specifically in the 2nd half). Thought our PG play was terrible and the stretch toward the end of the first half where we turned it over on seemingly every play was the difference along with horrible defense.

Nowhere to go but up!

I couldn't agree more here with the comments about Cole. I have so much respect for people with internal fortitude and Jarryd represents a stellar role model for our younger Hawks. I agree he has a bright future and I wouldn't mind seeing him involved with the program at some point if he chooses to go in that direction. He has obviously worked on his game and looks like he will have a solid senior season.

May is a true athlete, he just needs some help.
McCabe - man I like how this kid played. Probably my favorite but May has experience and some serious hops.
Basabe - you have to remember he's a freshman. The kid grabbed 9 boards to lead the team. He's long and will only get better.
Cartwright - kid is fast but seemed to be a little apprehensive with the ball. I was surprised that we didn't see him take it to the rim a few more times. On high screens we need help defensively. Brommer just runs into the dribbler and Cole gets too far out of position leaving the backdoor open.
Brommer - he has certainly improved and can finish (somewhat) around the rim. He needs to take a ballet class to improve his balance. He also needs to quit making dumb DUMB fouls.
Cole - I like the kid's heart but he is simply too short. Plus he can not finish around the rim at all. I like that he's hustling and trying but his body just can't compare to players that are 4" or more taller than him.
Marble - he had one nice series where he scored 5 quick points but he also got burnt on defense too many times. Good learning experience for him and based on his size and athletic ability (plus pedigree) I think we will see him starting in two years.
Payne - I was flat out disappointed in the way he played. He picked up his dribble so many times that I thought he was playing the old girls 6 on 6 games where he could only dribble twice. He's not a threat offensively and teams know it so they don't have to double him. He doesn't take it to the rim so the perimeter players are never open for kickouts. He has very average (at best) interior entry passing ability and he doesn't appear to be able to lead a break. I hope his game improves overnight.

It will be interesting to see what happens when Gatens comes back from injury. Do you sit McCabe or Basabe to play Gatens? Do you pull your C and run with Cartwright, May, Gatens, McCabe and Basabe? We have a nice surplus at the 2, 3 and somewhat 4 but really need help at the 5 and could use some help at the 1. Same as always, the 5 and the 1 are going to be the key recruiting pieces moving forward.

I was surprised how slow Basabe's footspeed looked. Marble didn't have great footspeed for that matter either. I can never rate Brommer that high either, he is just to darn coordinated yet uncoordinated at the same time.

On Payne... "I thought he was playing the old girls 6 on 6 games where he could only dribble twice."
-That made me laugh until I realized it was true and wiped the smile off my face.

No way do we pull Cole from the starting line-up! I was thinking about this earlier too... We might want to look at Gatens, Cole, McCabe, Cartwright and May. Bring in Cully, Basabe, Marble, and Brommer off the bench.

We were pretty even on our assessment with the exception of Cole vs. Basabe.

Cole had what, 17 points 8 boards today and that ranks him below Brommer?

Cole had 7 pts from the FT line and was 5-11 from the floor. The kid simply can't finish inside. This is SDSU not a Big10 team boys. If you can't finish against these guys how do you think he is going to be able to get it to the rim on Tues & Thursdays? I don't mind if you disagree with what my opinion, but just because the kid gets 17 points against a lower D1 team doesn't mean a whole lot. It's how he gets the points and whether he can produce going forward. He doesn't have the body. I love his heart but he simply can't finish around the rim.

Fair enough but when will Brommer EVER score 17 points? I don't disagree with your assessment of Cole just ranking Brommer ahead of him.
