play calling rumors

I've heard the rumors that gd wasn't calling the plays. Jon even acknowledged this in the instant reaction. Can anybody confirm this? Will the question be asked at this week's press conference? Better question, will it be answered? Imo (and in the opinion of many others) this was a completely non gd called game. Again, just curious if anybody has any "super secret insider" info.

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and calls plays like a duck, it was Greg Davis.

I hope that this was not GD calling plays and signals a changing of the guard, because if it was GD the chances are he goes back to his normal tendencies.

Agreed. Please let this game be the "greg davis is making plans to move out to a farm...where he can run and has a big old pasture...."

I don't think it's Davis' tendencies you have to worry about. Rather, you need to worry about Jake's tendencies. In the NW game, most of Jake's down the field passes were to receivers that were, at least, open by 3 yards. You've also seen how Jake does against pass defenses like Indiana's, like prevent pass defenses like Maryland's and Ball State's, like UNI's, and also, you've seen Jake struggle against better pass defenses like the regular pass defense of Ball State, ISU's, Pitt's (can KF glean anything from this?), and the regular pass defense of Maryland.

Let's see Jake have some good games against teams with 'good' passing defenses. Does Minnesota have a good pass defense? How about their front four? Does it put pressure on the QB?

Can Jake buck his trend?

I think some of you who wish GD is gone don't understand football all that well. Davis has implemented the most prolific, high scoring, and come-from-behind offense that KF has ever seen. This is especially required, this season, since Iowa's defense isn't that great.

Like I've posted before: Davis can't help it if Jake hasn't,so far, shown he can make the right reads or throws in this offense.

Riiiggghhhtttt. He got run out of Texas, where he damn near had NFL talent every year, because he is such an offensive savant.

Is any question truly answered at a presser? Maybe the occasional softball or two, everything else is obfuscated into something as irrelevant as the presser itself.

First we took control of the line of scrimmage for once so that makes play calling look a whole lot better.

Second we established a running game and pounded the rock.

Third we threw the ball vertically since that is what all teams challenge you to do and had some play action game.

Finally I do not care in the least who is calling plays when you do these things. It could be Mary Ferentz for all I care. I want results period.

You throw hyperbole at me to prove me wrong? That's some weak sauce, son. Give me some facts.

The facts are pretty simple. Rudock does exactly what he is coached to do, if he didn't he wouldn't be playing. Earlier in the year, he was being coached to not take chances. Yesterday it appears he was coached to take more shots. He attempted throws yesterday that he hadn't attempted all year. That is due to coaching during the week. It wasn't so much a difference in play calling, but a difference in mentality, which is the coaching that happens in practice. Maybe that was a KF led change, maybe it was a GD led change, but irregardless, it was A CHANGE.

BTW, I saw probably 10 football games yesterday (mostly of ranked teams) and almost all had a horizontal passing game.

Where does one start......

The obvious, is at times, Iowa COMPLETELY forgets the vertical game and becomes entirely too predictible. Yesterday, better, with a few vertical passes to loosen the defense.

Most of the complaints of the GD engineered offense we have seen the last few years are valid. If you don't see that then you really aren't watching as much football as you say you are.

Yes, the top teams have some horizontal O, but it is mixed in with significantly more vertical than Iowa tends to produce and there lies the frustration of the Hawk faithful.

It looked like O'Keefe was calling the plays. It was basic KOK football. Pound the ball between the tackles... Pound the ball between the tackles... Throw the ball down the field.

GD has shown since he has been at iowa that he wants less FB sets and less tight ends and more shotgun. Yesterday we used more FB, more tight ends and less shotgun. The run set up the passes which were down field. This is also different from typical gd at Iowa as he has tried to use horizontal passing and spreading the field to open lanes for running.

Yes, I agree. And I'll say that he can lead the receiver across the field really well. But when reaceiver is running down field they always have to slow down to catch the ball. T Smiths TD and the flea flicker come to mind.

He was much more deterned to work the ball downfield and that is a huge change.

Jake was making these throws last year. We called more of these intermediate passes last year after the short passing debacle of 2012.

Yesterday was more classic pro-style offense. I did think Chuck Long's analysis was interesting that Jake in particular seems to throw better out of shotgun. Long said Jake seems to see the field better from the get go out of shotgun. If true that is something he can work on because Iowa runs better out of under center unless they try to use parker and wadley and canzeri as fast backs out of zone read.

I get that he doesn't have the strongest arm but it is strong enough and gets the job done. The flea flicker was more on the rb as the rb made a terrible toss back to him and made it tougher on Jake.

3 passes of over 30 yd completions...I don't care if the wr had to slow down a little as that will open up the offense.

I said in another thread it was Tom Arnold calling the plays. I swore I saw him designing plays on the palm of his hand during one of the TV timeouts. I think it was right before the flea flicker for the long gain.

And Play Action! Don't forget the Play Action! Oh how I've missed those KOK Play Action Passes. Damn it, I'm getting sentimental now.
