When Kirk retires should Phil Parker get a shot at HC over the kid with the silver spoon? Parker's expressed interest in a head coaching gig. Is he more deserving than Brian?

Other people say PP does not want to be a head coach but maybe that is at Iowa, too much spotlight.

If he were to take a head coaching job, it would most likely be his alma mater Michigan St. if Dantonio retired or gets booted within the next couple of years. PP has to be getting close if not already in his 60’s, so if he really wants it, it would have to be soon.

PP's a guy I would sign to a long term contract. Where's Barta with his bucket of GOLD and magic signing pen.

Phil played for Michigan State in 1985 when Iowa was ranked #1 and Long led that memorable last drive and bootleg play.

He's probably early fifties, maybe 54 at the oldest. Either way, his clock is ticking if he wants to be a HC.

We'll have to see. Bill Brashier was perfectly content with being Hayden's defensive coordinator, despite Barry Alvarez comment that it was a travesty that he never became a HC somewhere. Like Parker, Brashier had a secure gig, and don't underestimate what it means in the life of any level of coach to have one of those.

See Pat Narducci, Dantonio's longtime DC who's seat at Pitt may be starting to get a little hot.

Phil is a proven commodity, has the type of personality that would get along well here, and the passion for teaching the game that you really want in a HC. I don't know what his offensive philosophy is, but I think he's humble enough to delegate to a qualified oc.

He should be the first call the day Kirk retires, as long as that isn't in fifteen years.

Gotta think they call Narduzzi first assuming he doesn't totally shit the bed at Pitt.

If Phil wants the job I'd fully support him getting the nod over Brian at this point. Let Brian keep coaching and maybe head to another school for a few years at the least. Phil is old enough that Brian will still have a shot down the line if he proves himself worthy.

No matter what you think of Kirk, give the guy credit for hiring 2 great DCs and staying out of their way. Norm and Phil have won a lot of games for Iowa.

As for Brian, Barta and anyone else involved in the hiring of a new HC would have to be the most tone-deaf people on Earth not to realize that the fanbase would full-on revolt if Brian was hired as HC.

He hasn't even shown he's a worthy OC. But he wouldn't be the first OC saddled by Kirk.
