Phil Parker on Epenesa, Pass Rush, Raider Package, Blitzing

I thought Parker's comparison of current LBs with Hawks of the past was interesting:

I think the aggressiveness of Josey, I think he’s very comparable to a Pat Angerer type of guy, really impressed with him, and Ben Neimann has done a great job. He can play in space like Kirksey. I don’t think he is Kirksey. And I think Bo is a good go to work guy, get things done guy like James Morris.

Iowa getting home on pass blitz(s) is a rarity. shooting the gap on the run blitz(s) is a different story they are actually pretty good a it. Having a LB or DB coming off the edge never seems to work it seems like you can eat a sandwich by time they get to the QB. For whatever reason, the timing is just off.

My favorite blitz is the one where the safety starts sprinting in from 25 yards behind the line of scrimmage when the ball is snapped. Sometimes he even gets all the way to the line of scrimmage by the time the ball is thrown.

Unless it is the mike linebacker crashing the A gap, I would rather have Iowa not pass blitz it just leaves someone on the back end ready to get smoked.

Our best qb pressure has been with Anthony, AJ, at end with Hesse at DT. Our blitzing has not been effective, though admittedly we have not seen much of it.

I'm sitting in a meeting right now and can't watch the video. What did he say about no Raider package this year?

I think he was comparing Bower and Morris in terms of work ethic. He was asked to compare the three '13 senior LBs to this year's trio of seniors. I got the sense that he wasn't ready to put this group up with '13 yet.

Likes the speed he can put on 4-man front for passing downs. Would rather do that and play nickel than Raider.

But why not mix it up a bit? We seemed fairly successful with the Raider last year. Even if you do it just a couple times a game. Seems like it's tough for O-Lines to deal with. But I guess that's why i'm sitting behind a keyboard and not making Phil's salary. :)

Phil answered the question. No I do not grasp the answer. But Let's see next week.Aj will only get better.Must PUSH Qb's.more time to jell.

This is correct, even threaten a double A gap blitz like the AZ Cardinals and the pros like to run because even NFL QBs hate that instant pressure in their face.

College QBs hate it worse and if you can get them off their spot their accuracy diminishes most times.

I'd try to do something to help the pass rush. But, he thinks the pass rush is fine. Like you, I'm at a keyboard and not making his coin. Outside of Barrett and, maybe, Thorson, we're not facing real threatening QBs the rest of the way.

Yes, some of us were wondering if Hesse to tackle with AJ at end would develop this season.

Cant remember the game but AJ did a spin move on a guy a few weeks ago that was so fast and clean and then he was in on the QB.
