Petras

What am I missing about this kid? I think one site had him as a 4 star but even with that one site and others listing him as a 3 star how was he not more highly sought after? He's as ready made to go of a QB as you'll find at that stage. He's big and look at his highlight tape of the throws he can make. Putting the ball where he wants to 50 plus yards down field isn't even hard for him. The stats he put up were just video game numbers against a pretty high class in CA 50 tds 2 picks 64% completion percentage. I just don't get how he didn't have schools fawning all over him. Was it because he committed fairy early to OSU prior to opening himself up again? (Oregon) Even still a kid like that should have had more offers then what he had. I think we've hit a home run in the QB department for the foreseeable future between Stanley, Mansell and him. Just need a playmaker or two to emerge and get some more

Stanley is already a good qb and those two youngsters have loads of potential, so I gues the position looks as good as it ever does at Iowa considering our offensive philosophy.

All the hard work Brian Ferentz is doing has great players lining up to play offense for Iowa. We are lucky to have him. Seriously, I'm being serious here. Brian Ferentz is going to be the best offensive coordinator Iowa has ever had. I believe that.

If I recall, Petras was verballed to Oregon St program for some time. I think others had backed off. But their coach was fired and Iowa jumped in; could show him Stanley's stats and KOK closed the deal. Now, it does look like he was under recruited that would allow him to pick OSU. But, I'm happy as a clam he's a Hawk.

Hope is Free no? I support you I guess.Stanley to our Te's will be very tough. But I support your thought.

Nothing against Petras at all, but everyone seems to be sleeping on Mansell, and that might be a mistake. He's got a little moxie to him, and I like that in a QB.

My money is on Mansell being the #2 guy next season and being a 2 year starter down the road. My only concern regarding Mansell is that he gets impatient and moves on before Stanley graduates. I'm only getting my info 3rd hand but I've heard enough from coaches in the program that think he's quite a playmaker.

I agree 100% and I was perfectly happy with Mansell being next in line. But with Petras coming on board, he is very similar to Stanley. So, now you have to figure is our same ol' same ol' coach going to go with Mansell after Stanley? Mansell is more of a dual threat qb. Or will he go with a continuation of Stanley? But I also do see Petras with more upside vs Mansell. Now, if Stanley gets hurt early and Mansell has to step in and he performs wonderfully, then he probably flips the switch, but barring that, I think Petras is a continuation of Stanley.

Auditioning for the Head of the Ministry of Propaganda, I see.

It would be nice if we could whip some teams and get him some playing time this fall, to keep him interested.

I totally see that angle on it. How important is style to their evaluation? If it's the end all be all why even recruit a kid like Mansell? I hope that's not it and I'm sure if asked they'd say it's not. To me if they play well the being mobile part adds to what QBs can do. So I know it's often looked at as a negative depending on the offense but to have a QB in this system that's capable of running the occasional QB draw or read option just adds to the playbook too. Makes us (any team) way harder to defend. That's not even counting the adlibbing when plays break down. Is he going to be the better choice between he and Petras? Time will tell. Unless Stanley gets hurt it's his gig for the foreseeable future.

hawk, i think Mansell is a qb that this staff could live with and use and be very satisfied with. Banks is the only really true dual threat QB we've had under kirk, so, I see him more comfortable with a prototype qb like Petras. But, having said all of that, I just want the best player playing. If that's Mansell, then that's okay by me, because i see Petras is a very high bar, talent wise, and if Mansell is even better...whoa!

bottom line is we're okay at qb for the next 4/5 seasons.

That's pretty funny, but no propaganda plan here. Think about it. Brian Ferentz won 8 games starting a first year QB, two freshmen offensive tackles, and playing two freshmen WRs a huge number of snaps. Point out where Iowa has ever started two freshmen offensive tackles in the Ferentz era. The interesting thing is, if Penn State doesn't come up with a miracle, and his young players don't make turnovers at the worst possible time, MSU and NW could have been wins too. This season was actually very close to being 10-2.

If you factor in the fact that it was his first year on the job...and the injuries that happened...you have to say, this was a very successful start to his career at OC. Iowa played with one arm behind their back in some of those games due to the inexperience up front.

He's determined to throw the ball down field too. He used his tight ends brilliantly throughout the year...getting them in the seams and getting Fant deep against linebackers and safeties. His only downfall was having 18-19 year olds at critical positions...and they make mistakes...and are inconsistent.

Mark my words, the next two years will turn the haters into supporters of KF's move to put Brian in this role. He's going to make his mark...and Iowa will be a very good offensive football team.

Exactly. To have the most important position pretty much locked up and in not good but great shape should only allow them to springboard forward. Most teams can't find one or make a decision between a couple guys. We've been fortunate there between CJ and Stanley the last couple that we've had solid play there and Stanley should only get better too. If a couple weapons can develop holy cow. Could you imagine this offense with a DJK or Marvin McNutt type of receivers to go with our TEs? Good lord the potential is right there to be had I think. We aren't that far off...
