Pete Gales vs Gordy Bohannon

Too young to remember but why did Gordy get the time as the season went on?

I was really young at the time, but I remember Gales being designated as the “thrower” and Bohannon was the “runner”. Hayden didn’t start chucking the ball down the field until Chuck Long became the full time starter in ‘83.

I think both of them got banged up at various times that year and Hayden went with the healthiest available. But the above poster was mostly correct. Except for the rare shot to Dave Moritz we didn't air it out very much that year. We relied on the defense and Reggie Roby to carry the day.

Not exactly. Bohannon got more reps at QB, but the pass/run ratio was about the same for both of them. Neither had a great TD/INT ratio. Gales actually was more productive in 1980 than he was in 1981.

Fair enough. Your perspective is a lot better than mine. I just remember people saying Gales could spin it better than Bohannon could. FWIW, I was like in the 3rd grade.

translation: I'm old. ;) FWIW, I may or may not have partied with Pete Gales in my dorm.

Keith Chappelle was on that team and his 1980 season may have been the greatest single season any receiver had in the Fry or Ferentz era. One of the great "forgotten Hawks."

I was 12 years old back when those two played. I recall sneaking into Kinnick in 81, security was pretty weak back then. The south east corner had two gates that security put a chain around to keep the doors from opening with a padlock that they didn't actually lock it. A group of us would take the padlock off and then throw the gate doors open and we were like a stampede running in. Secrutiy guys chased after us, but we were always to quick and fast for them. We would then just sit in the grassy endzone seating areas. We snuck into the ISU, IU, Nebraska and UCLA games that year. It was glorious and a massive adrenaline rush every time we made our break into Kinnick:)

After the Rose Bowl, the 82 season security locked the padlock and actually had security guys at each section with cameras set up. They really stepped up the security and ended my days of breaking into Kinnick.

ok, to.add some possible nuance Gales was playing really well in the first half of the season but he was crushed at Illinois. again it is one of those inside stories but friends i had who had the pulse of hawks said Gales was not popular and the Off Line let him get clobbered against the Illini. any way games was hurt and then somewhat passed over for Gordy. Gales was a great athlete as was bohanon. make your own conclusions but watching that Illinois game our Off line became very porous.

HF in general didnt like turnovers. That first year after all the hype about the O it was like...what the heck? Fry hated the thought of an INT. The Hawks 1st game out ran all over a decent IU team in the 1st Half .

Even in following tears he avoided intermediate passes over the middle.

Recently drove thru Mesquute. Why would anyone live there.

Quiet, warm, low taxes, golf and casinos. Perfect retirement community. at Hayden's age you don't need night clubs. You can also get a lot of house for your money in a small town with a casino. I know other people who've gone that direction

If that was true then those linemen better have been discreet about it. It was reflecting on them as well and they could easily have been passed up or replaced. Also the team was winning with him, getting off to that famous 5-1 start and zooming up to #6 in the rankings.

Stuff like that probably happens more than we would like to think. I'm not going to beat the Ronnie Harmon Rose Bowl dead horse here but the 1988 Peach Bowl opening kickoff has always looked fishy to me. I've heard rumblings that third string running back Chet Davis was not a popular person on the team. When he got the opening kickoff a wave of NC State players had already descended on him like a plague of locusts. He was popped and fumbled inside his own five, setting the tone for a wild day that featured fifteen turnovers. You can draw your own conclusions as to whether or not the wedge let those players through a little easier than they should of. In any case Davis was not with the team the following season.

I thought Hayden had moved back to Texas (Dallas area) a few years ago anyway. When they recently had his 90th birthday party it was in Dallas.

Also where the Vegas shooter lived. I’d imagine he and Haden Fry crosses paths at some point.

That SO reminds me of my years working in broadcasting when one of my jobs was teaching public access cable classes. This was back in the "Wayne's World" era when every high school and college age kid thought that stuff was cool. I also taught them how to use the radio studio. Some of those public access radio shows actually were pretty good. Among other things that how the Mystery Science Theater 3000 guys got their start in Minneapolis and Madison.

If you think that camcorder is antiquedated, you should have seen some of the stuff we found tucked away in closets and crawl spaces in the cable company building. They may have filmed "Andy Griffith" with some of the stuff.

Have you actually been there though? Beyond warm
