Penn State / Michigan

I'm not sure who Franklin has been paying off...but Penn State is getting so many favorable officiating calls right now it's terrible. There were at least three pass interference calls in the Iowa game that weren't called. One was blatant, but a few others were plain and simple holding or interference.

I watched alot of the Michigan / Penn State game last night. The officiating was atrocious. Harbaugh spelled it out in his press conference. It was egregious. I hate Harbaugh, but he was absolutely right. Penn State's DBs were holding on every play late in the game...every play.

There were several plays that stick out that changed that game in the first half. Penn State's tight end shoves the Michigan defender on a long TD catch...clearly offensive pass interference. Touchdown Penn State.

Michigan gets a long pass play that would have put them in the red zone when it was 14-0. The ball was underthrown, and the Michigan receiver comes back for the ball...the Penn State defender has his arm around his waist, the Michigan receiver pushes the arm away...and gets an OPI. It's the epitome of either defensive pass interference...or a no call. The Penn State defender was out of position and didn't know where the ball was...he was beat and got bailed out. On the next play, Patterson throws an interception and Penn State goes down and scores.

I just don't get it. I honestly think Penn State is getting ridiculous calls. Strange.

I started a thread last nite about "the ncaa has to fix the PI calls" and I used some calls/non-calls from PSU Michigan and some of our recent games as examples just like you did.

College may have to do what the NFL does is allow no contact after 5 yards. The clutching and grabbing, arm bars (ISM was arm barred yesterday when he made that great one handed catch and I have no idea how the deep officials didnt see it), and not looking back to play the ball have to be called as PI and also the offensive receivers pushing off have to be called.

And it needs to be called as equally as possible in all leagues.

The NFL allows the defender to bump and chuck for 5 yards and they do a pretty good job of calling illegal contact after 5 yards but it stills happens so much that many are missed. But it is better than college where that Mich defender kept holding the Hawk receivers all up and down and across the field.

Totally agree with you and the offensive PI that was not called against PSU was sooooooooooooo blatant that any time a receiver has the total arm extension pushing off the defender needs to be called.

Regarding the one handed catch by ISM, and potential flag.

Kirk would have taken the five of fifteen yard penalty and replayed the down.:)

He loves those hidden penalty yards and those favorable down and distance situations, as well as the chance to grind more clock.

He's rather grind clock than score quickly.

Of course I'm kidding about all this. But Woody Hayes, for one, would occasionally take the penalty over a long gain if he wanted his offense out there grinding clock and wearing the defense down.

And he was a pretty successful coach. But imagine the grief he would take today when his ultra conservative, risk aversion approach didn't work. And it occasionally didn't.

The officiating was absolutely ridiculous in favor of PSU, both the noncalls and the calls. Those PSU idiots were whining all week about the Iowa game to. A bunch of them claimed to write letters to the BigTen. Absolutely pathetic fan base. I was pulling for Michigan big time.
