Pemsl looks lost

Lately he's a turnover waiting to happen every time he gets the ball more than 5ft from the hoop. Last night he really looked lost on defense in the 1st half. Everybody has bad games now and then, but he could be hitting the infamous "freshman wall" -- mentally more than physically.

Cook (4), Pemsl (2), Kreiner (2) combined for 8 turnovers last night. The problem when big guys turn it over is it usually leads to an easy basket going the other way because there are no bigs back.

Big guys just take awhile to develop.. The game is so much faster then HS. I wish both Pemsl and Cook would take those 13 footers when open. Cook seems to hesitate and seems unsure of himself when he catches the ball away from the hoop. Pemsl doesn't even entertain the thought of shooting outside 3 feet. I never really saw him play in HS but come on if you can't shoot 10-14 footers what are you doing with your practice time??? You have to take those shots and not pass them up. Those are really good looks being passed up by both of them sometimes. Kriener is showing them how it's done along those lines anyway.

All of the players mentioned in this thread are freshmen. They were playing high school ball a year ago. And they will have a year of Big 10 experience under their belts next year. I love the potential/upside of all of our current freshmen. They need time to learn, grow and make mistakes. No worries here.

The underclassmen having turn overs is a lot less of concern then our "star" player consistently driving into trouble and turning it over. If he thinks the pressure on him is hard now - what's he going to do when the NBA boys are on him? If he makes the league - which I'm not so sure now - they'll play him tight and force him to put it on the floor, as it is, he struggles with that at D1 - let alone in the league... good players are always dealing with double teams and such, great players recognize it and figure out how to manage it without turning it over.

Jok is clearly playing hurt.

Yep, they need to learn to just turn and shoot, that one dibble they try to take is strictly habit, especially when they are already just 5' from the basket. Just turn and shoot.

You would have to believe Fran and staff are teaching them up on this. You would hope they are but the players might have gotten away with dribbling underneath in high school and the PTL and we know old habits are hard to break.

I get where you are coming from but the concern I have with both JBo and Pemsl is they are undersized and that is not going to change. Pemsl came out early and showed some crafty moves but now teams have him scouted and they know to sag and there isn't a need to respect a mid range jumper. JBo is going to be forced off the 3 point shot and teams will force him to finish at the rim.

On the other hand, Kriener at 6'10 with a better shooting touch and Cook who is a great athlete have a better foundation to become better players in my opinion.

Cook seems more than willing to take the mid-range (and longer) shots when open. I just don't remember him making any. Obviously he thinks that is part of his game. Maybe it will just take one or two makes and he will turn the corner.

Yeah he's more willing but if you watch he's still slow to pull the trigger. He hesitates and has to size up the situation for a second or two before rising up. I don't know if that's a court awareness issue or confidence in his shot issue or what. But we all know that if your hesitating/pausing when it comes to making plays it usually isn't good. It's somewhat of a subtle thing but depending on the player it can be a big thing.

He wasn't doing it early in the year.

Bohannon towered over the Maryland freshman point guard and that kid looked pretty good to me. I think Bohannon is going to be an elite Big 10 point guard by his junior year...just my opinion.

I agree that Pemsl has been schouted. But he can learn patience, mid range shot, etc. But players can't be taught to enjoy physical play IMO. Pemsl loves to get physical and he's playing in the right conference for that style of play. He's going to love playing Michigan State and Purdue for the next 3 plus years.

Cook, Pemsl & Kriener have tremendous potential, as do Bohannon & Moss.

I was hoping for 6-12 or 7-11 this year in the Big Ten. They have a chance to meet or exceed that.

This is the youngest team in the Big Ten. People need to relax. Next year and the year after will be better.

We will miss Jok's scoring but Jok plays zero defense.
