Patience, folks. Patience.

Yes, we're all disappointed in the recent outings against Creighton, Campbell and Clemson (hmmm ... all schools starting with 'C' ... perhaps we see a pattern here). And guess what, next week (EDIT: has the potential) to be absolutely brutal with trips to Cedar Falls (hmmm, another dreaded 'C') and the Cyclones (what!:eek::eek: ).

But the negativity, "open letters" to Fran, calling out individual players or play, even calling for yet another change in coaches, is plain dumb and hardly warranted. How do you think that plays with the current players and any recruits who might be considering coming to Iowa?

The previous two coaches left this program in a mess. Lickliter, it turns out, was a total disaster. Fran is working hard to turn the thing around, and seems like the basketball mind, the program representative and the leader to get it done.

This team is very young and the four seniors who supposedly are the leaders would be riding deep pine on most other B1G teams. Yet, that is who Fran feels he needs to call on at this point to remain competitive night in and night out. That may change in the coming weeks but right now the bottom line is this team is just not playing good ball. I agree with Fran that the team is better than what they've demonstrated the past four games; I fully expect he and the staff will get it turned around. Perhaps Mel's struggles mirror what's happening with the staff -- they all seem to have hit a sophomore slump.

Fran has a good group of freshmen and will have even more talent coming in next year, assuming they all make it to campus. He deserves time to right the ship, even if that means another rugged year this season and some struggles next year.

Patience, folks. Hold your desire to come here and rip the program after every loss.

same old garbage just another year, used to Iowa blowing chunks since Sa was run out of town and doesn't look like that will change for another 2-3 years min...face it Iowa BB is dead right now

Hardly. It may not be as good as you or any of us would like right now. Hey, guess what? Fran and the players feel exactly the same way. Iowa basketball is very much alive and on its way back; the journey may be harder and longer than any of us would have preferred. But it will be completed.

I agree with the OP about patience, but all this "the team isn't this bad" talk is nuts. Yes, the team is bad, really, really bad. I listened to the IPFW game on the radio and Dillard at the half said the team doesn't talk on defense. What? Your average rec league pick up game has guys talking on D, but not big ten hoopsters? I am less disappointed with wins and losses and more disppointed with how weak-minded this team is. Man up and play with some intensity....it just might help.

With the exception of Ogelsby, White and Gatens, the team needs a session with Dr. Phil it seems. They all look and play scared and get it taken to them game after game. Losing is one thing, but playing soft and losing is another. Somebody needs to fly Cole back here for a pre game "discussion".

Agree with Tweeter. Not like you wave a magical wand and we back. That would be nice wouldn't it. The fact is that Fran had a monumental task coming in and he is IMO starting the climb out of the basement. He has the best recruiting class we've seen in what 10 years coming in next year. That's a start.

unlike under lick they are trying, last night it was not the Clemson defense that caused the players to miss their shots there were to many open shots from three that were missed
not to mention layups
and Clemson suddenly becoming NBA sharpshooters from three, even a little used freshmen on the bench made 3 of them
so that made it hard to shut done their top scorer like Clemsn did too Iowa with Gatens
til players start getting back
i wouldn't mind a 4 guard lineup of
Cartwright
Gatens
Oglesby
Marble
McCabe

this would put the ones that are playing the hardest and are not dissappearing during games
not sure why May has stopped shooting, just seems like if he misses a couple he loses his confidence
Basabe looked better than he has
this is going to be up and down team this year and only idiots and fools have expected different
myself predicted a 18-20 win season, but i am enjoying watching these kids give it all
their shooting will get better, it can't always stay at 25%
next year is a little under a year away, height is coming as well as talent
even the expectations should be tempered til the new group are sophamores and have had time to get over some growing pains

Herbys entire post=huh?

The executive summary:

- Clemson was hot.
- Iowa was not.
- Iowa can and will shoot better.
- Fran should start the players who are playing hardest, which in this case are four guards.
- Give it time. Things will get better.

Common denominators in the three losses... Owned the turnover and steals battle but got killed in rebounds and FG%.... Have to take the rock out of the opposing teams hand as much as possible, rebounding is a great way to do that. Then you just have to make the easy baskets, too many missed open looks. The team is struggling right now and it's tough to watch. Switching the lineup can sometimes do more harm then good to a player's confidence, so hopefully Fran makes the right decisions to get the team out of this massive slump before it gets worse. Another thought would be to stop using the press so much. Don't get me wrong, I love applying pressure on defense, but it has given teams way to many open looks This team just doesn't have the athleticism to pull it off consistently since most teams are more athletic anyways. At the very least change up what kind of press you are running to give the opposing teams some different looks.
