Pathetic front seven

I have never seen such a pathetic season long performance from an Iowa front seven than I have this year. When they can avoid getting cut, they cant get off the block. When they can get off the block they cant make a tackle. Clearly the worst tackling team I have seen under Ferentz in the past 10 years. You can talk all you want about getting better thru the season but this defense doesnt have the playmakers or talent to get it done.

look at the other side of the ball.. We held them to 13, we scored 3.

I agree we were abused mostly in the 2nd half. but the offense was the biggest problem...

Paying the price for poor recruiting in 2007-2008. We are not explosive in the front 7. DL cannot pass rush or hold gaps. We have two average DL and then a bunch of below average players.

Passing game took a step back today. Could be a combination of a young, inexperienced Iowa team on the road and also coming off a bye week. I would have thought the bye week rust would have been shaken by half time.

All around bad game. We can look at offense and defense. However, I can look at the offense and say "They can play better." And I do believe that.

I don't think this defense can be any better. And let us not forget, Penn State is a bad offense. Yes, they gave up only 13 points...to a bad offense.

Michigan is going to run over, through and around this defense. NW may do the same. I don't think we can stop Nebraska. Even Purdue is going to be a challenge. Thank goodness we don't have to match up with Wisky this year. Anyone who expects 13 pts. to be the norm is going to get very sad very quickly.

I agree pathetic front 7, but at the same time they let up 13 points it's not their fault.

13 points guys. Are we really going to go there? If I went back in time to 1:30 today and told everybody we would hold them to 13 points can anybody out there seriously say that they would be disappointed? When our D holds anybody to 13 we should win easily. This was not on the defense. Look to the other side if you want to point fingers.

SCORING.... can make your defense look a whole bunch better, fast.

As can a D-line that is able to get even the slightest bit of penetration.

I don't think anyone in this thread is laying the loss solely at the feet of the defense. I'm not even necessarily disappointed by the 13 pt. total. I'm hugely concerned by the lack of D-line play. They were manhandled from start to finish and any team with better offensive weapons is going to tear us apart.

Iowa 2011 requires the O to score more than normal for W's. D just isn't that good. So get your head out of your *** coaches and play to get leads and continue from there. If the D can make some stops or TO's its a bonus.

Again, the problem with this pathetic front 7 is that most of the guys on the two deeps. are gone next year. The LB's have shown a little something, but the lower classmen on the DLine look like crap.

Seriously, unless a miracle happens, Iowa is going to walk into next season with a D line that would be FAR worse than 2005, which was not even close to B1G standards.

Really, Hyde, Prater, Bernstine, Daniels, and Binns are the only guys on D playing at a B1G level.

Guess what? They are all gone next year.
Yes I know Hyde is a JR. No way he stays.

I've said this elsewhere, too. Hope some recruits bite on the "playing time" bait, but that won't be enough to help in time.

They looked horrible, but they only gave up 13 points, on the road, in front of 107,000 people really isn't that bad. Our offense looking inept was the problem today.

Two thoughs of mine regarding the front 7:

1) I think we really missed Bruce Davis today. Morris got caught up in every single run play and is so small he does not match up well against a power running team. he cannot get off blocks. Davis was a good run stuffer at the middle spot and we do not have that.
2) I think the d-line has shown very little. What is reason for not playing any of the true freshman? Raymon and Cooper each have the size and they are definately needed next year. Get them on the field and get some time. They can't be that bad. I see several other true freshman making impacts all over the B1G. Iowa's freshman are only really playing special teams. This needs to change and you need to put some playmakers on the field, live with their mistakes and hope they make some plays.

In regards to Cooper and Raymon, I think they have conceded the fact that the DL is going to be **** this year. They are holding them back to get them built up in the S&C program and to keep their eligibility.
