Paterno

Just got through watching the B10 coaches on media day.

Joe Paterno got some tough questions on his health (3/4 were solely about his health).

He had some issues this summer. I wonder if he is on meds or if he is still in recovery mode. He looked very old and seemed to be slurring his speech. Not the same Joe I'm used to seeing.

I love Joe as everyone does. Just wonder after watching this today if he has stayed too long.

His record does not reflect this the last 3 years, but it just kinda gave me an awkward feeling seeing him today. First time I've felt that way.

Hopefully its the meds. or the recovery from health issues. If not, this is definitely his farewell season.

Every time I see him I get the strange thought the Paterno was actually fired years ago, but he was so senile that he just kept showing up at work and they finally said screw it and let him be the pretend "coach".

I loved it. Don't let him fool you. He's as sharp as ever. He had a few "one-liners" that were hilarious. I will say it looked like he had either been fake-baking all summer or had lots of make up on for the cameras.

I'm sorry but this statement is just idiotic. He's earned the right to coach as long as he wants, just like Hayden and Bowden. People make the assumption that if they have a down season, or he dies on the job, that he's stayed too long. BS, however long he wants to stay is the right amount of time. This is college football, and it's all about tradition, and he's walking talking tradtion.

I don't even buy the argument he should go if he's hurting the program. There is absolutely nothing he could do at this point to the program that would counteract all the good he's done for it. The way I see it, it's his damn program and he can do with it whatever the hell he wants.

I agree. He IS the program. Even if he stays for 5 more years and doesn't win a game, he's going to be remembered as one of the greats and Penn St.'s program will barely be effected.

When he tried to quote Mark Twain- that was the best.

I said nothing of PSU firing Joe. I said I wonder if he's stayed too long. I meant for his own good. I as much as anybody love Joe Paterno. What I don't want to see is a bad ending to the greatest college coach to ever coach the game. I would not be in favor of the admin. forcing him out. I want him to go out, on top, of his own accord.

I just hope he knows when that is. After seeing him yesterday, it was the first I've felt that he may be pushing a bit too far. He did not look good. I'm not the only one who thought this, there are 4 pages on PSU board that thought the same thing.

Bobby Bowden's ending bothered me. After all he did for Florida St, being shoved aside was not how I would have wanted it to end. He deserved better.

Joe does too.

Nobody earns the right to stay anywhere. Its not some 1:1 thing where every good season earns you a horrible one.

But with that said Joe Pa is still earning his keep, his teams are very good every year.

He would not be allowed 5 winless or losing seasons. That is exactly my point. I do not want to see him mercilessly shoved out like Bowden. He's had some great seasons the last few years.

Hopefully he can have 1 or 2 more. He's 83 now. I can't see him coaching for 5 more years. Another BCS or National title would be a perfect way for him to wind down his career.

He'll be around as long as he wants to be. However, I'm sure for the last few years and for any future years as HC, many of his day to day duties are handled by his assistants.

I thought he handled all the idiotic questions from that woman reporter quite well. He obviously didn't want to talk about that, but she kept after him. I think he's pretty much a figure head, but he should be. Like cibula said, he IS the program.

He very well could be a figure head, but he certainly should be allowed to stay as long as he wants. As cibula said, he IS the program.

You could tell he didn't want to talk about his health, but that stupid reporter kept pressing him. She made a fool of herself. I thought JoePa handled it quite well.
