Parker Hesse and Matt Nelson, with their powers combined must become...

Rotate them and keep them fresh and to see who has the hot hand and moves each game.

Can also get some blitz help on that side occasionally on passing downs.

It will be good experience for them--and they're all we have next year at DE. Very poor recruiting at that spot.

I counted four freshmen/red-shirt freshmen DEs on the roster, plus some others listed as DL with size to fit DE. Don't think that is bad recruiting.

And that wasn't counting Hesse or Nelson. So I think the recruiting is just fine in this area.

Not one sophomore or junior and recruiting is fine?? Outside of Ott, what have we had? Meier was a gamble that's paid off--an undersized, average Big Ten caliber player. Spears is not a D1 level player. Hesse and Nelson look to have potential but both need at least one more year of development. We're lacking in quantity and quality of D1 caliber talent at this position. We put all our recruiting effort into quick-type players--a plethora of d-backs and small running back types (wadley, parker, joly). I'm not saying this was a terrible move--we needed speed, but it neglected other positions, namely O-line and D-line.

I admit I'm not a guy who understands all the nuts and bolts of football but any chance of changing to a 3-4 in lieu of lack of DE depth? Just asking?

I think the Raider defense is kind of a poor man's 3-4. One of the defensive ends can drop into coverage. One thing they don't do so well is blitzing. This group is way too obvious when it does blitz. In player development Iowa tends to emphasize coverage skills over blitzing. That's the way it has always been since the days of Norm Parker. I think they've messed up the coverage on the zone blitz a few times, and got burned over the top.

We will see hope they can, both are young players with some promise. Will need them to step in and play well..

i don't think we have the type of DL studs required to effectively use the 3-4.

Good grief............the Hawkeyes Defense has been outstanding in 2015.

Ask Cubit, the Illannoy coach, or perhaps Paul Chryst might enlighten some here.

Drew has been on the field, ONLY about 50% of the time, this year.

Reese Morgan and Parker are gojng to have a very Salty, Solid Defensive unit on the field, this Saturday
& the rest of the way.

Everything you say here is accurate, but I hope the "good grief" was not directed at Imported Ankle. Iowa does not have the type of linemen needed to play a 3-4.

Seven d ends on roster. That seems like a good number to me. Why would that be poor recruiting? Hmm???

Re Ott: next man in..Canzeri now number one r.b. not Daniels. Nelson. You number one now.

Johnson is nose. Johnson will make a great nose in a 3-4 in the NFL. Mark my words. Bazata. And a third. Meier is the rush linebacker with Faith as backup. And the linebackers. And the secondary. We really have the personnel of a 3-4 running a 4-3 right now with Meier.

Isn't this more a conflict in defensive philosophy than a conflict in personnel?

How many sacks will we lose with a 3-4 compared to if we kept the 4-3? Our 4-3 isn't getting many sacks either.

In a perfect world, you would have players at every class level and nice depth at every position. In reality, it doesn't work that way at a place like Iowa, especially if attrition occurs. The incoming recruiting class includes 6 guys with current position of DE. That will change as I would guess some of them become d-tackles. Part of the reason Iowa has commits from that many d-end body types is those recruits see 2 seniors starting (Ott and Meier) and the possibility of early playing time.

The time that Nelson and Hesse are getting will help out a lot for next year.

I don't think there is a single area on the roster where recruiting is "fine". Every position group could use an upgrade in talent and depth. The reason Ott and Smith are SRs instead of RS JRs is because of poor recruiting. Iowa had to play a FB at RB the last 3 years because of poor recruiting. They're currently running their starting RB into the ground because of, you guessed it, poor recruiting.

I'm really hoping the new football complex gives recruiting a boost because it has been a weakness for this staff for a long time.
