Zona, Zona State, and Utah to the Big 8.

Cal and Stanford will bolt and find homes obviously, but Oregon State and Washington State might have to go FCS…

Tell ya what, if I’m the B12 I start talking to the ACC about merging. That would be a ridiculously unstoppable basketball conference.

SEC, Big Ten, and Big 12 move to 20 teams and make up Division 1A. The other 69 teams make 4 conferences in D-1B. The little schools' conference champs have a 4-team playoff the 2nd and 3rd weeks of December with their champ getting the 4 seed with the 3 big boy champs. This has 2 main positives that the current system doesn't have. It will eliminate all bitching about who should make it because everyone had the chance to get in. The main positive though, is that it will make the SEC bitch about not getting 2 teams in every year. I like this system because of that, unless there's another system that makes the SEC bitches bitch even more.

Cal and Stanford might be better off going independent. Couldn't be worse than the options that are available. Oregon St. and Washington St. could slide into the Mountain West. Not ideal and they would probably have to cut sports, etc. but they don't have many other options.

Not sure who wants Cal and Stanford if not us. What do California smarty schools do for the SEC? More to the point, neither would dignify an association with a community college education like Alabama and Mississippi State. The Big 12 might want to open up California, but the academics are just as bad there as the SEC. And, if that was going to happen, I think it already would have. ACC? They would probably take them, but damn, that is some serious travel nightmares.

I see no value to the Big10 in Cal. Hard pass for me. I would take Stanford for the academics, Olympic sports, and name. But, that probably only happens if they are paired with Notre Dame.

Wash and Oregon State will probably join the Mountain West. Isn't that the only play they really have? They don't have enough juice to be Independent.

The Big 12 has done a great job of positioning the conference for the future. A couple years ago it seemed like they might be the odd man out. Kudos to the Big 12.

Stanford and Cal seem like B1G schools to me. I also think the B1G and the Bay Area footprinit would be a good fit. Maybe the B1G is still waiting to see what Notre Dame does? Stanford and ND would be two good ones.

It seems the ball is now clearly in the ACC's court as to what they do to survive and thrive.

And, yes, Oregon St and Waashington St to the Mountain West.

It's amazing how fast the Pac 12 disintegrated. But when you read the history, the roots of the disintegration were laid by former Pac 12 commissioner Larry Scott.

I think 2 ACC schools end up as the final 20 in Big Tens' super conference. Another 4 ACC teams go to SEC. The rest pair up with what's left of PAC 12 and form a conference a little below Big 12 but ahead of Mountain West.

I guess a good question would be what does the SEC do next?

Yes, they could raid the ACC and there are some good candidates, but do they want a bigger national footprint a la the B1G? Maybe they go after Stanford and/or Cal?

Who could the ACC get now to build their brand? It's starting to be pretty slim pickens........

The PAC is flatlining……………….. toast!

Joel Klatt posted a You Tube Video that really explains how the PAC 12 created it own demise. Its 15 minutes long but definitely accurate on how the Big XII out maneuvered the PAC 12. Personally I'm not excited to see Oregon and Washington become members, nor was I excited to see USC and UCLA. I thought adding Penn State was beneficial, but luke warm toward Nebraska. Rutgers and Maryland were Mehs. I don't think these additions were or are in the best interest of the football tier below the OSU, Michigan, and Penn State.

Very good post. I admit my own thoughts are echoes.

That was a good listen, thanks for posting. He lays out, over the past decade, how the PAC-12 made a series of poor decisions that lead to to where they are today. Also had some good points on Florida State and why they probably won't be leaving the ACC anytime soon.

The PAC-whatever, the name will still stay, but it is over. Larry Scott(former commissioner) f*cked some shit up in regards to the finances, so even a merger with the Mountain West is super complicated. If you are the Mountain West do you want to take on that debt? Feel bad for Oregon St. and Washington St. hope they can make it work on a dramatic drop in their athletic budget.

This poaching is all stupid.

College FB needs to adopt the NFL regional alignment and scheduling model.

It stops poaching. It keeps regional interest alive. It makes more money.

The Stanford president issued a statement late Saturday saying they are aware of the changes and are analyzing their options. They remain committed to being a great university with an excellent athletic program.

Stanford and Cal are terrific schools. The Big should be overjoyed to have them as members.
Cal may be the best school in the entire country with seven Nobel Winners on faculty and Stanford is also an excellent school.
I won't question the academic advantage, but the fan attendance at Cal and Stanford games is less than man mid major programs. If eyeballs are the goal then they are lacking.

The UC Berkeley powers have scheduled a meeting for Tuesday morning to discuss their Pac 12 membership.
