…Belichick making it work at UNC?

This is either going to be a rousing success or a total flop imo, no in-between.

72 years old, never recruited before and obviously isn’t going to start now (his rep will be enough that he won’t have to), and his demeanor isn’t exactly what people are looking for as a college coach. He knows and we all know that this is only going to last 2-3 years at most…any recruits he does land will not have the same coach when they’re juniors.

On the other hand, he also knows how to deal with primadonnas getting paid millions which is what CFB is now at the highest level. He isn’t going to be intimidated by donors or ADs. He knows what it takes to win tons of football games at an Xs/Os level.

Gonna be interesting.

There is talk that he wants to set this up where his son can take over in 2-3 years. We(Iowa) fans kinda know what this looks like.:)
I don't think it is just talk. Allegedly, it was one of his terms in taking the gig that his son be named coach in waiting. I have to believe that is aspirational and not an enforceable term. UNC is a good school and I would hope would not bend over that hard to get this grumpy old coot. That said, if he is a success, his time left coaching is limited, so having a transition plan to his son/Dcoordinator makes some sense.

Fry, he is gonna flop in the sense that he won't bring trophies or titles. At best, he does what Prime did at CU. Make UNC relevant to ESPN and FOX. Get some high level transfers who want to play for a living legend. And take advantage of a soft schedule in a second tier conference to win 6-8 games and go to a bowl for a couple years. Then he will get bored and quit.

Let's look at the facts:

--Guy has never coached college or recruited
--He is an asshole to the media and mercurial with his players (although his ex players mostly love him)
--He knows nothing about building a college staff or running a college program, but he has demanded full control of football operations
--He is hiring his son to be his right hand, whether his son deserves it or not
--Most importantly, he is a fraud. His record without Tom Brady as his QB is 83-101. The guy fell ass backwards into the GOAT in the most important position in sports and takes all the credit for his success and titles. To be clear, I am not saying his coaching was not a part of that. He is a good tactical NFL coach and NFL mind. But, he is a shit de facto GM, shit talent evaluator, and doesn't know shit about offense. He sucked with the Browns, did nothing when Brady blew his knee that one season, and ran the Patriots into the ground when Brady left (for a sinking franchise who subsequently beat my Chiefs for another ring on Tom's finger). Tom=reason they won all the SBs.

This gonna flop.

Odds are sure against the guy for all the litany of reasons. I question what UNCs reasons for hiring him are. Is it true he's having his son be wrote in as his successor? Even KF says that's bold af and I can't see why UNC would go along with that. Besides the whole he's 72 and probably not gonna be around to see a freshman graduate. It just looks like a train wreck to me.

What are the odds BF ends up on his staff? That wouldn't surprise me if he does.

Most of his former players 'mostly love him', but I haven't heard one yet say they think he'll make a great college coach. Or even a good one.
One thing that folks haven't mentioned, and which is important and in Belicheck's favor, is who he's replacing. He's taking over from Mack Brown, 73 yrs old, so NCarolina has experience with veteran coaches and all that involves. Brown's run the past 5 years was pretty good -- bowl appearances & one ACC championship game. Would Tar Heel administrators be content with a replay? Probably, except for this last season.
The other thing folks haven't mentioned on this thread is the draw for recruits to play with one of the all-time successful NFL coaches -- and all that means in terms of contacts in the NFL. Granted, most recruits don't remember his Super Bowl titles, but they'll be reminded of them, to be sure.
That said, I give this marriage 2-3 years.

The reason NC is doing this is simple: butts in seats and featured television slots for the games. Whether this works or not, NC football is the lead story right now. It will continue to be a top story in the sports world off and on. Bill moves the meter given his pedigree. If Prime takes the Dallas job tomorrow, do you think CU has any regrets with that hire? They went from laughing stock to filling their stadium and getting prime time tv slots overnight by hiring Prime. Same deal here.

I think college football is so messed up now that a school's success is going to depend primarily on how much NIL money that have to spend each year. You don't recruit players as much anymore; you simply buy them.

I'm guessing Belichick is going to attract a lot of donations to their NIL fund. Based on that fact, I think he has a chance to do o.k.

I suppose. Seems pretty short sighted but that's certainly a legit thing. I wouldn't have put UNC in the same vein as CU as far as status of their programs at those points. CU was pretty much an afterthought. UNC has been way better then that these last 5/10 yrs or so or am I wrong? I'd have to look but I thought Mack Brown had them looking pretty good a few yrs ago and even prior to him taking that job I thought they were better then ok.

As much as I despise Coach Prime, it pains me to say that there's no way he comes anywhere close to what Prime has. Prime is a con artist that uses his over the top persona and ego to entice recruits and gets players to buy in. Belichick has no personality, no recruiting experience, and as tight lipped as he is will probably say absolutely nothing to persuade a player. I would love to be a fly on the wall listening to his recruiting pitch and his attempt to win over parents.

I heard on Cowherd's show today that UNC's NIL fund went from $4 million to $18 million. That is probably part of what attracted him to the job. He brought one of his sidekicks along to be the GM. They will recruit as a gateway to the NFL. With a solid NIL fund and what he has to sell, he will get players. And with that, he will win, probably at a higher level that what they have recently seen.

Look, what Prime did was a con job of sorts, but the man can sell himself like Willy Wonka. While I don't see grumpy Bill following that model, what he is going to do is say to parents and their kids, "I am running an NFL factory here. No one knows what the league is about and what it takes to make it there. You wanna play at the next level? You better grab this spot or I will put another kid into first round." The pitch will work. He will get portal and high school kids with that pitch. But, his ceiling is about what Prime's is. Get some talent, win some games, make a splash in the tv and talking heads world, but no trophies or playoffs.

BTW, CU was okay this year. They are losing two generational players. I don't care who they bring in, they gonna regress next year.

One thing I've started to think about, is if CFB does start to go more towards a paid model (which we know it will), you're going to see a lot more of this. College HC jobs are WAY more secure than NFL, and at the higher tiers they pay just as much or even more. I have to believe that Belichick at UNC will have way less stress and much less at stake than he did when he was at NE.

This^^^

Dude is VERY obviously making more money off his own marketing than he is as a HC. Think about how many commercials you see him in every weekend. He's even in commercials outside of sports networks or football game times. The guy is on TV constantly and he ain't doing that for free. CU and JS have just been his pipleine. They're the "brokers" of Prime Inc., so to speak.

Agreed about regression, but how good were they really? Finishing 9-3 is one thing, but doing it in the Big 12 when they didn't play a single team they shared the 4 way split with and then lost to Nebby and Kansas. I guess they're currently ranked 23, but I'm far from impressed.

they're leaping forward about transparency of pay for play. they're by passing univieristy, school, parents, family and fit.

we'll see

Agreed. Total paper tiger. Nebbie was an incredibly flawed team and kicked their ass. They beat almost no one of note. And that OL was shit. If it was not for Shedure being a magician back there at times, they would have been Iowa on offense. You can't replace Shedure in a season. They are going to be worse next year and with a tougher schedule.

They are ranked because of Prime's fame and the guy who is gonna win the Heisman. THat's it.

I agree that the NFL gig is harder and has more risk. But, they generally get paid more for it. College game is catching up. There seems to be a smidge more work life balance in college. The NFL seems like 60 hour weeks 51 weeks a year.
