Out of the box lineup thoughts

McCarty- If memory serves, he had some interest from Buffalo and a couple other smaller programs. He appears to have decent handles, is quick and has 5 fouls to give every game on D. Marble clearly is not comfortable at the PG spot and we need his slashing + Cartwright takes about every other play off on D when he is gassed. Any shot he gets some spot duty?

Stoakes-Saw a lot of him in the PTL and he definitely held his own. He is long, athletic, good hops, and I saw him knock 3-4 3's in a game along with a nice mid range game. My point here is the guy has some talent and is more of a threat than DArch. Any shot he gets some PT?

Ogelsby-Catch 22 here as we need his shooting, but I have been impressed with his handle and decision making for the most part. Could he slide to PG for a few minutes to free up Marble on the wing?

Olaseni-Start him for a couple games and see what he can do at the back of the press. Brommer's knee is limiting his time and his play isn't setting the world on fire. If the dude can grab a few boards, block or affect a couple of shots and get a couple garbage hoops, we will be + on the productivity side.

go with a 4 guard lineup and center

Cartwright
Gatens
Oglesby
Marble
McCabe

this may be a small lineup but it should help with putting more pressure on the ouside and maybe let them play man to man defense

not talking about the BT, we have 6 more non-conf game to get this figured out
and it might actually shake up thing a bit
besides it wouldn't be that much different than what we had for size last year

Cartwright 6'1 same starter as last year
Oglesby 6'5 new starter
Gatens 6'5 same as last year
Marble 6'7 Basabe is 6'7
McCabe 6'7 Cole was 6'7

so other than being guards i see no difference in size

So, we are going to waste time finding a line up that will work against our pre season foes, and then play a different one once we start conference play? Ahhhh. Good plan.

Oh, and when did Marble grow two more inches?

6'6 and 3/4 my bad, that was posted last year and all summer, i expect Basabe to be starting by the BT season and hopefully Brommer comes around
so explain to me whats wrong with not only shaking the players up and finding a starter out of Oglesby, May and Marble
as i said you have 6 games left to get your starting 5 by the BT season
its you that needs to get "out of the box"
and one last thing May is 6'5, so a trade of Oglesby or Marble for May is not a bad trade but i see it as a upgrade as one is a freshman and the other is a sophamore

What are you talking about? You expect Basabe to be starting by the BT season? Hasn't he started every game so far? Do you really think sitting him on the bench will help him out of his funk?

I would not have a problem with Ogelsby getting the starting job. I would start him over May at this point. Who are you going to bring in to rest Cartwright? You have all three of our potential point guards in the staring line up.

Even Fran brought that up the other night but said it was a possiblity of happening and even mentioned Stubbs as relieving Cartwright,
Basabe can actually benefit from coming off the bench for a few games to let him relax and get back into playing shape
this team needs to get their confidence back and if it takes shaking the lineup to get it done, so be it

Herby, You change the starting line up to **** people off and motivate them, not to get there confidence back. Losing your starting spot is not generally a big confidence builder.

you'd be surprised how much motivation you can get from benching somebody but you would have had to play sports to understand that concept
or dealt with kids

I like the Olaseni idea. The only center with solid post moves has a bum knee, so if moves and refinement will be lacking anyways, let's put the most athletic guy out there. Archie's just kind of a body out there except for rare moments of brilliance*.

*- Did I just say that?

Also, Oglesby does handle it well. He's not a consistent driving threat, but can we say anybody on the squad really is? A few possessions at PG for him wouldn't hurt while getting Bryce some air.

A 4 guard line-up w/ McCabe @ Center would get eaten alive in the Big 10.

Exactly. Terrible idea. Even with our normal lineup we can't out-rebound the Sister's of The Poor. Opposing teams would have 20+ offensive rebounds with the lineup suggested by herbyhawk. I can't believe how many fans post ridiculous shiat like this.

on that i agree ,
the ooc games are set up to establish your starting lineup
if it means somebody getting benched to do it, fine
a starting spot is not a guantee
some player get lazy thinking that they can't lose their starting spot

Who do you think you are talking to Herby. I said that you could use benching as motivation. You said it would be used to build confidence. You seem to be the one who has not played sports.

You can play with the line up any which way you want but until our best players Cartwright and Basabe start playing better, it won't matter.

All the jucos in Iowa and the Midwest and our staff couldn't dig up a couple of guys to help this year? It's like McCaffrey wrote this year off or something the way things have unfolded. Outside of Ogelsby's shooting, nothing McCaffrey has said about any player in the offseason is panning out in the real season. 50-50 would be one thing, but basically zippo is hard to fathom. An entire team in a funk is not good.

Mel and Bryce have to play their way out of their funk, period. Gatens is fine. Oglesby should start over May. The 5th spot is either McCabe or Brommer, who also has to be ready for the Big Ten season. I am fine with Gabe getting more minutes, over Archie, but clearly he is not ready or fran would have him in more than a minute/game.

i'm talking to the ones that keep critizing with out thinking
last years lineup
pg Cartwright 6'1 no other pg on team
sg Gatens 6'5 no real backup, Marble spent more time backing up the 2
sf/WG May 6'5, Marble 6'6 3/4 ended up the starter to end the season
pf Basabe 6'7, McCabe 6'7 the backup
c Cole 6'7, with Brommer 6'9 and Archie 6'9 as backups

and as i pointed out with this years team
pg Cartwright 6'1 same as last year no true backup, again Marble is the backup
sg Gatens 6'5, Oglesby 6'5, Marble is a backup here as well
wg May 6'5, Marble 6'6 3/4 is a backup here as well a increase in heght here
pf Basabe 6'7, McCabe 6'7 is the backup and is now starting
c McCabe 6'7 is now the starter with Brommer and Archie each at 6'9 as backups
Olaseni at 6'11 is the tallest player on the team but gets garbage minutes

so if you look at the two lineups from last year to this year, there is absolutely no difference in height up and down the roster
it is what it is

also as i pointed out next year there will be a MAJOR change in the lineup both in size and positions

pg Gesell 6'2 backup is Clemmons 6'1 a true pg
sg Oglesby 6'5 if not Marble at 6'6 3/4, and Ingram 6'3 a true sg
wg/sf May 6'5 Marble 6'6 3/4 and White 6'8
pf Basabe 6'7, McCabe 6'7 and Meyer 6'10
c Woodbury 7'1, Olaseni 6'11

people have to be patient changes are coming, this is a SOLID top 25 class and i really can't remember the last class that was this solid up and down the roster

Good points made. I guess I am struggling with what I perceive to be a lack of urgency around making us a little better this year. Maybe I am all wrong and building towards next year is the smart play, but geez, can the fans take more awful hoops and not be in a funk themselves? A backup PG with some skills would go a long way to cure some of our lineup woes. As is, we have 0 options at the most critical position on the floor and without somebody to create, we are brutal.

I found myself missing Cully's jumping out of bounds baseball passes against Clemson.....
