I really really really like this depth chart. I feel this starting group has more athleticism than any Iowa team in a long time. I see at least one national award winner in this group, continuing a trend that started in 2014.

Wallace did an interview this week, and he mentioned his clear top 5 LBs as Colbert, Niemann, Welch, Doyle, and Benson. So I suppose Benson should probably take Jones' or Wade's spot. It sounds like Wade, McDonald, Jones, and Evans have been working as a stand-up rush end. I know he is injured now, but I wonder if Jestin Jacobs will force himself into the rotation this fall, or at least into special teams duty?

With 4-2-5 now being base, and DJ Johnson looking like the favorite to start at that position, I suppose he needs to be mentioned. It sounds like Terry Roberts and even Fr Dauran McKinney are shining in the secondary.

And you didn't even list Nixon (quite a DT rotation).

A bunch of Fr and So in that 2-deep.

Yet another Nelson on the roster

and how many consecutive years is it now with a Smith at WR

Ourlads isn’t always perfect but that’s pretty close.

I think Barnwart plays RG actually and I’m still holding out hope Kallenberger wins the starting LG spot over Paulsen.

The defense should be strong with a very good pass rush. Need to stop the run. Secondary should be very athletic especially with the 4-2-5 look. If the linebackers step it up it could take our defense to the next level.

This team will go as far as the offense can take them. We need a much improved run game, consistent WR play, and improvement from NS at QB. All three are possible but it remains to be seen.

One thing about ourlads, they at least try to keep up with off-season and in season changes to the depth chart. They're about as accurate as you can hope for and a good resource when looking at other B1G schools.

As for Iowa, they have some things in place for 2019. They have some spots to figure out but nothing looks dire.

I will say that they better make something happen this season because 2020 has "rebuild" written all over it. I agree with many on here who think the talent level is being upgraded through better recruiting. But the OL will likely lose both tackles and the Paulsens who are the depth. The DL will likely lose all 4 starters. New QB too.

It’s pure conjecture at this point that we are losing both tackles and both ends. If that happens it will hurt, but I still see a lot of returning experience for 2020.

I’ll do a way way to early 2020 projected depth chart and you tell me what you think.

QB- Mansell RS JR (4th year in program)
RB- Sargent SR (3rd year starter)
RB- Young SR (3rd year starter)
WR- Smith SR (3rd year starter)
WR- ISM SR (3rd year starter)
WR- Tracy / Ragaini RS SO (2nd year players)
TE- Beyer SR (2nd year starter)
TE- Rutgers Transfer Vokolek
LT- Kallenberger JR (3rd year player)
LG- Britt FR (1.5 years in program)
C- Linderbaum SO (2nd year starter)
RG- Barnwart SR (3rd year starter)
RT- Miller FR (1.5 years in program)

DE- Waggoner SO (2nd year Player)
DT- Nixon JR? (2nd year player)
DT- Shannon SO (2nd year player)
DE- VanValkenberg SR (2nd year player)
LB- Niemann SR (3rd year starter)
LB- Colbert JR (3rd year starter)
Cash- Johnson SO (2nd year starter)
CB- Hankins SR (3rd year + starter)
CB- Brents JR (3rd year player)
S- Stone SR (3rd year starter)
S- Merriweather (2nd year starter)

Again I think Golston will return and potentially Alaric, adding even more experience to the above. But nonetheless when you return 8 3 year starters and 14+ guys that have started in prior years I wouldn’t call that a rebuilding year.

I think that 2020 team does take a small step back, but I like the talent set up for the future beyond that.

young young backups.
5 RS FR 4 SO (and 3 RS SO)

concerned with DB but .... it's Phil Parker and 95% that is not a weakness.

2020 will be an interesting schedule.

Cross-overs
@OSU @PSU MSU

Last game against Wiscy on Saturday instead of Nebby on Black Friday.

Plus New starting QB

This is why I think Kirk will retire after the 2019 season. If he doesn't quit after 2019, then the schedule gets easier in 2021, 2022, 2023

I don’t see Kirk retiring unless we have a really great season. I think he’s one of those guys that wants to go out on top, on his own terms, and hand over the reins to Brian with a stacked roster. I think it also depends on if /when Gary Barta retires. I can see Kirk taking over as AD and taking on that role too, just to keep his fingers in the Iowa pie. This scenario will keep the consistency of most of the staff sticking together and a huge selling point to recruits. Kirk will do everything in his power to make sure Brian has all the tools he needs to succeed.

Looks like the starters changed much less than their backups. Of course August will bring more changes. Can't wait to see who makes a name for himself this year.

Who ever put the list together has been reading the press releases. I'll give them credit for that. Not too many of the guys on the list are placekeepers. Some of the redshirt freshmen are not quite ready for prime time yet, but there is a lot of talent coming up through the ranks.
