Is just not as solid as last year and its cost us a couple games...

We improved a lot of offense.. but our regressions on defense have made it so those improvements have not had as much impact.

Our defense has been solid to good most games.

In other games it has been good until the last five seconds of the shot clock. In other games it has not been good. The Wisky game had a lot of the last two sentences.

It's frustrating to see them play outstanding defense for 33 seconds, only to give up a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

True, the Gasser 3 pointer to just beat the shot clock and the Dekker putback of the airball were basically the difference yesterday. Both were more bad luck than poor defense. Get a stop on either of those possessions and the game very well could have went to the good guys.

Our defense was outstanding the last half of big last year and NIT.

E May was tough, Gabe was playing tough defense whereas I think he is going too far from basket now.

When an opponent comes in with a 4-like (or maybe a 3-like) center as Wisconsin did, it's time for a junk defense. Unless it's pick and roll defense, scrap the man-to man defense. For example, put a quicker man (like White or Uthoff) on the outside to guard Wisky's center. Let Iowa's center patrol the middle like a zone (where Gabe's and Woody's defense is the best).

Woody is fine and did well. In fact he was a plus in the plus minus stat yesterday.

Kaminsky is not just a shooter, he has very good post moves too. Put a smaller guy on him and he will back him down and score. I thought Woody did a real solid defensive job on him, Olesani not so much.

Our 3 ball D was terrible at times. Not sure it was our rotation or if we were trying to help out too much inside and worrying about the penetration in the lanes. Our inside D couldn't stop their big guy.

I did some cross referencing for when woody and kaminsky were in the game together and by my estimations we were +2 pts during those times. At worst we were even. With olaseni versus kaminsky we were about -7 so I would say it depended on the big man we had in.

Iowa has a very good defensive club. Might want to check the NCAA statistics that prove it.

Their defense was ok in the 2nd half. Giving up offensive rebounds and not coming up with loose balls in scramble situations were the killers.

The defense has been more sufficient than it was last year. The defense had to be great last year because the offense was not quite there. Now the offense is performing at an elite level so we can win without playing defense at last year's level.

I don't think there has been defensive regression. The loss of May has hurt, but Gesell, Woody, and Gabe are much improved, while Marble, Ogs, and White are where they were last year (Marble might be a little better). The team is playing at a higher tempo this year, and Utoff and Jok, in the minutes they've played during B1G season, have not been as effective as one would like. Those factors have led to a few more bad-looking possessions, but I don't think the team has taken a step back defensively at all.

Not sure how you can say that... statistically we are worse and what ive witnessed...

What are Iowa's defensive stats when you take out the sister's of the poor and focus on games played against ranked opponents. What do Iowa's defensive stats look like then?

96.9, 44th in adj def this year, 91.6, 22nd in adj defense last year

big jump in adjusted offense this year

1) I wonder what the difference between first and second unit defense is.

2) the 5ppg jump in adjusted defense: coming from fatigue from higher tempo? coming from weak links in the 2nd unit? not enough eric may?
