OT: WHY Does Wrestling Start Its National Tourney At Peak of March Madness?

I am only an ancillary wrestling fan, but I love my hawks and always root for them in every sport. But when I read that they start the national wrestling tournament on the exact same day that more fans tune into March Madness than any other sporting event in the country, I have to ask if the goons who run wrestling are really that oblivious to the world around them? Do the WANT no one to care about wrestling and want no publicity for their biggest event? While they are at it, why not hold their tournament on Super Bowl Sunday? Perhaps they could do it on Christmas?

Again, I'm no wrestling expert, but this scheduling is easily the dumbest PR I have ever heard of. They couldn't hold it the week before NCAAs? Come on, Gabel and crew.
 
Probably a different fanbase. But as a casual wrasslin fan, I would watch if it didn't clash with The Dance.
 
Many sports cater to the common fan: higher scoring, quicker pace, expanding playoffs (when common fans watch) etc

College wrestling doesn't seem to follow that model. They know the diehards will come out and watch regardless of what else is going on.
 
I think they do it on the off chance a viewer looking for the dance may happen across their channel by mistake.
 
There's no good reason for this to happen. They could easy start the wrestling tourney a week earlier.
 
Plenty of basketball fans COULD be interested in wrestling if they were exposed to it. With wrestling's big day being during the dance, no one will ever be exposed. Hell, if the president made his annual address, no one would watch it over the tourney. Just dumb planning by the wrestlin execs.
 
If there was even casual interest someone would know the score. I actually have passing interest.

If you asked a hard core wresting fan they could give a rats *** about basketball.
 
basketball and wrestling are mutually exclusive. always have been, always will. even in h.s. the two groups of athletes don't like each other, and you can say the two groups run into each other in the college level as well. wrestling fans call their event the real march madness..........
 
Frustrating...was able to watch both with ESPN3 on laptop (when game was on)...Would be better to have a week later or earlier for sure...Didn't the Academy Awards use to try to go up against March Madness and finally relented several years back, and moved their event into Feb.

What's even more frustrating is trying to get results or updates of matches and team standings online on sites like ESPN, or any Google search for that matter, even Iowa own pages don't update.
 
The NCAA is smart about the Frozen Four(hockey). They take a weekend off and play the weekend after the Final Four.
