OT: Solon Spartan football in 3A

I'm originally from Solon and still cheer for my alma mater. However, that said, I anticipate that 3A will give the Spartans a rude awakening this year. Harlan and Williamsburg, among others, simply seem too established and strong.

I think that Solon gets fine coaching from Miller and Co ... however, he doesn't quite have the same level of talent that he enjoyed just a year or two ago.

Yeah definitely not the talent they had the past few years. But I think 3A is a good way to get some competition. If they remained in the old class, they still would probably rule the nest.

I would have liked to see them compete in 3A with last years talent. After reading a couple articles on how they could have competed for a 4A title I would have liked to see what they could do there. On a side note, I think those that wrote about them competing for a title in 4A were a bit off their rockers. Compete, maybe. For a title, no. Yes they had talent, but they simply aren't going to be able to put the amount of talent on the field as your top tier 4A teams.

Sorry Solon had some good talent past few years. But against 4A week in week out, different ball game there! WAY off their rockers!

Yep, poor Solon having to play in 3A just won't stand a chance. Beat Williamsburg twice, beat Pella with ease and now playing in the state championship game. Go Spartans prove the doubters wrong and punish the other teams just for showing up.

way to jinx them

I'd love to see them win it, but I don't see Heelan losing. That's pretty much my general philosophy when it comes to 3A football: if a team beats Harlan in the playoffs, they're my pick to win it all.

I read this morning that Heelan had 3 starters returning on one side of the ball and none on the other side. They didn't expect to get this far either. Should be a good game!

I am very impressed with Solon. It's become the small town to live in if you dont want to live in Iowa City or Cedar Rapids and send your kids to those schools. They have a growing business community which really helps support the school district. They will continue to thrive.

I'm absolutely surprised and impressed with my Spartans. I'm happy that they've proved me wrong thus far. Heelan will be tough though ....

Should be a good game, Heelan was not expecting to make it this far this year and probably should have lost to West Delaware last night. WD has 5 turnovers, some very crucial ones. WD ran the ball with ease when they weren't coughing it up. Plus Heelan opened the 2nd half with an onsides that they turned into a TD. Still only a 1 score game after all that

It would be pretty funny if they won the title and their only loss of the year came from one of the smallest 2A schools in the state. :)

and even funnier if that small 2a school would lose in the final to a 3 loss NP team
