OoTH-I feel bad for Jake....Conservative vs Playmaker

I think Jake has made his game more conservative to match what KF likes. Past Iowa QBs have tightened up as they have been with the program longer. The fans want to see more of a playmaker and not a game manager.

I dont think KF likes CJs style. Last year KF threw CJ under the bus on national tv for changing the play and scoring. This year KF protects himself by saying CJ didnt practice well. When did he ever say anything like this about one of his QBs?

So as it looks to me you can be conservative and have the support of KF or be a playmaker taking more risks and have the support of the fans.

Thoughts? Thumbs?

Jake might be the 3rd or 4th best quarterback in the Ferentz era by the time he's done (if he stays the starter). Unfortunately for him there seems to be a better one on this team.

If KF doesn't like CJ's style he shouldn't have recruited him.

It was obvious there was more life and energy in the offense in the 2nd half.

If it wasn't due to CJ's style (after all he only threw the ball 9 times) then it was most likely due to a PaulRhodes-esque half-time pep talk by KF and the players came out and executed.

Does everyone forget Sokol? Jake might be the third best QB in that group. Think about that. I had friends report that they thought Sokol looked the best and that CJ had a lot of potential.

KF went with the guy that has less upside and could be molded into a game mgr taking no risks. The problem is it is a risk to take no risks.

Jake is a great kid, a model kid and a decent QB. We have had much worse.

CJ just has the IT factor!

I posted this on another thread but it applies here as well.

It would be very interesting to see the personal dynamic between KF and CJB. I'm guessing there are a number of things about CJ that create doubt in K's mind and that is a very tough hurdle for him to overlook. But K needs to look at him in a balanced manner instead of placing more weight on his concerns.

If K is going to play each game in a close manner, then he should realize that he may be behind at the end of many games and needs an offensive drive to re-take the lead. In such a case, there is no substitute for poise under pressure and CJ has that quality naturally. It's not that JR cannot develop more poise and confidence with experience but his tendency is to over-think each play from the "avoid the mistake" mentality and CJ does not let that enter into his head, at least I have not seen much evidence of that.

Bottom line, this puts K in a quandary because his natural tendency is to play safe, thus JR. I think that is fine, but only if he plays to build sufficient leads and that has been difficult to do with JR. Therefore, I believe the best option now is to go with CJ and please Coach K, don't try to coach away his natural strengths and ability.

Very true. You get a thumb.

What I meant earlier is Rudock has the ability to be that good. It might have gotten coached out of him.

Was Tate 'conservative'? He played some snaps as a true freshman.

I think Ferentz plays the guys who think will best help the team win.

Who would have been Kirks other choices the years Tate played?

Stanzi was more of a playmaker when he beat out Jake. He was more conservative passer the next two years.

Im sure Kirk thinks he is putting the best players on the field just as he thinks his offense is the the best one to run with the talent Iowa has. Not just me but more and more people are understanding that Kirk doesnt know best. In fact his record shows that.

Im not saying that CJ is the better QB. Has he played better this year?.... yes. I dont think its Jakes fault that hes not the fan favorite.

I'm nitpicking here, but the real truth is nobody knows that KF was angry about the CJB bootleg TD last season. You and a bunch of other people just assert that because it fits the ******.

EDIT: why is the site masking the word s-c-r-i-p-t?

I disagree. Ferentz said that "We couldn't even run out the clock correctly" or something during the post-game on field interview to that affect after the infamous bootleg against Purdue.

It is not about fan favorite. It is about bottom line results. We lost to a bad ISU team and Jake did little. We struggled to move the ball and get TD's against Ball St that losses the very next week to FCS 1-11 Indiana St. That is a YO! We struggle to beat UNI.

CJ provides a spark and that impacts results. If he does not play today and we lose 42-14. The team is responding to him being on the field as well as his talents.

Still a lot of work to do on both sides of the ball and I expect some mistakes from CJ but I see more rewards. Fans forget that even Chick Long had some high INT games from time to time.

Ferentz didnt recruit CJ if I remember correctly..Beathard fell into their lap..Beathard called and said he wanted to play at Iowa

The nice thing about either Q is they are focused and show very little emotion. CJ's pass to Powell was on the money with lots of air under the ball and not have it swatted away....It will be real interesting to see what the old Captain has to say regarding this situation....

I feel bad for the rest of the players when the offense struggles mightily. The good of the many outweighs the needs of the few. Let's see if Kirk realizes this next week and puts in the good sparkplug.

KOK latched on to him when Ol' Miss changed coaches and CJ didn't think he'd fit in with the new regime.

Makes me think of Stanzi's last season, seemed reluctant to take chances after the picks his Junior year, one the the better Hawkeye seasons. He didn't seem as fluid and natural as before. Have a feeling he was warned/cautioned to avoid turnovers and interceptions at any cost.....
