Only 14-15 seniors, holes to fill with Juco or transfers?

Not sure how many juniors, sophs, and frosh are on the team this year but not many players are graduating. Are there some offers left heading into Feb as maybe a defensive tackle or wide receiver from Juco, transfer or grad transfer would be able to instantly help. Lbkrs, DEnds, and DBacks seem to be stocked and same with OLine, RBacks, TEs. Would they take a QB as either a backup or push for playing time? Any players out there to look at?

Here you go if you believe this.

Unfortunately Excel does not copy paste very well.

I am probablymissing something or don't understand the question.

If there was not many seniors on the team this year, wouldn't that mean there is not a lot scholly's that are being freed upfor next year?

This question should have been asked 2 years ago, thats when you go get some jucos to fill out this year's senior class.

Good point you make. I probably should have said the hawks will be a young team so maybe they could get a Juco or a transfer to bolster the size of next year's Sr and Jr classes.

And NCHawkers list above shows how many total freshman and sophs are on this team right now, wow. I know some of them or quite a few are walk-on non-scollie players.

Agree we need some immediate JUCO help at WR.
I think we could also benefit from better Outside LB's.

I agree it would be great if many of our starters got beat out at their position which means we have better players coming up through the ranks or joining the team. The defense could probably benefit from more speed and other factors at linebacker. Two of the three 2013 lnbkrs are still playing great and starting in the NFL.

Right now I would love to see upwards of 9 starters on defense going into 2017 get beat out of starting positions by players who are even just slightly better overall but best if much better overall. What is wrong with that.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say we need a quarterback. Nothing wrong w/ Stanley/Wiegers but QBs during the Ferentz era since Banks win the most games the season they start outright. We would potentially be wasting years of eligibility, with what historically has been a negative trend, in 2018 and beyond.

In the seasons with contested QBs and seasons w/ multi-year starters the Hawkeyes have fewer wins on a per QB basis. There are a variety of factors that could be the cause but the record is clear - Banks, Chandler, Tate, Stanzi, Vandenberg, Rudock, Beathard all won the most games the season they started outright.

The graduate transfer rule was kind to us w/ Coluzzi, and it worked out great for Russel Wilson and Jake Rudock. At this point I think the notion that having a multi-year starter is a non-starter as far as Iowa goes. Bring in a guy who is ready. Next year, if he/they stick around, put either Wiegers or Stanley at the helm. If history is an indicator then we should start a new QB every year. Don't get me wrong. I would love to see Stanley and the Hawkeyes win the conference championship next year. It is just that the seven QB records over the last 14 years seems like pretty compelling evidence.

As for other positions? WR and interior DL would be obvious places for JuCo or graduate transfers.

I doubt Iowa goes the JC route. They rarely do. Funny thing is they've brought in some pretty good JC players over the KF era, they just don't do it often. I would imagine academic standards and the limited time at Iowa are the major factors there.

I love how people keep bringing up speed at outside LB. We have really good speed at outside LB. That is the least of our worries. Why would you want a LOT of kids who have been vital in the last 2 seasons get beat out? Why wouldn't you want them to get better? People pushing them is always a good thing, but this is a developmental program and our players almost ALWAYS get better with that game experience and as they get bigger, stronger, faster. I don't understand why 'fans' can't seem to grasp this concept. You bring up Hitchens and Kirksey. They were not really HS LB's. They came here as 'developmental' projects and it took them till their SR. yrs. to really 'blossom'. Hell, Hitchens even got 'benched' his JR year. Wish we would have had better players to beat them out when they were developing? I don't get it. I personally would like to see the 11-12 on defense with starting experience continue to get better. A lot of them will have 3 yrs. of starting/playing experience and that is invaluable.
Starting next year:
Jewell- 3 yrs. starting
Neimann- 3 yrs. starting
Bower- 3 yrs. starting
Bazata- 3 yrs. starting
Hesse- 2 1/2 yrs. starting
M. Nelson - 2 yrs. starting/ 1 yr. playing
Taylor - 2 1/2 yrs. starting
Snyder- 2 yrs starting
Jackson - 3 yrs. of playing time
Ragumba - 3 game starter

That's 10 kids that have a ton of experience on a team that's had a pretty damn good D the last 2 years. This is a coaches 'dream' and if someone steps up in Johnson's spot, this will be a top 5-10 defense. And anyone who pays attention knows that kids at Iowa REALLY shine their sr. yr. or after getting 2-3 of playing time. I guess I'm the only one who is excited about them and their 'talent'! And lastly, I really hope M. Nelson slides to the 3tech and can excel there so that A. Nelson can start at left DE.

Gotta agree with Icke on the LB position. I remember everyone bitching about and trashing each of Morris/Kirksey/Hitchens when they were young (Morris especially, he was crucified early in his career). When they were Sr. they were freaking studs. Jewell is already a stud, and Bowers played well down the stretch. Neiman looked healthy for the first time in forever as well later in the season, and played very well late.

People were also all over Snyder early in the season as he was making typical 1st year player mistakes. He has cleaned them up and was playing well down the stretch. Taylor's play was more worrisome if you ask me. He was making silly mistake mid way through his 2nd year starting. Hopefully he cleans than up as all the physical tools are there for him as well.

So, so much wrong with that.

You haven't identified any cause and effect whatsoever, but you want to use Stanley for a year and get rid of him after that just because of hoe QBs 10-15 years ago performed? You better have some data or reasoning behind it other than "just because." Talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Either we're gonna have to move some DEs inside or get a juco interior DL. Latter not happening. Hope some younger tackles can make big strides...

I have noticed a trend in the last couple of years, in that Iowa's offensive line size seems to inching upward. Right? Wrong? Comments?

I would say off and on with their weight, I am surprised the hawks are not going for the Wisky Arkansas type 320-330 pound behemoths. Iowa still only avgs around 300 if that as I think they prefer maybe a little more mobile and faster linemen. But once in awhile you find that really big guy with the great hands and feet who can also pull and move fast.

All I have identified is a pattern that has been repeating itself for the last 14 years. I was clear that there were likely multiple causes but the results seem systemic - every QB for the last 14 years won the most games the season he became the outright starter. Think of it like a particular type of aircraft that is involved in several similar crashes. You don't keep flying that fleet of aircraft while looking for the cause. You ground the fleet, move the passengers to another type of aircraft while investigators determine, and hopefully, fix the root cause. The crashes in this analogy are the drop in wins for multi-year starting QBs.

If Stanley is the outright starter in 2017 I can predict, with a pretty high confidence level, that he will have the most wins for a season during his Hawkeye career in 2017. This prediction is based in part because the team returns a lot. I can also predict, with a lot less confidence, that he may loose a game (or two) because of his inexperience. There is very little data to back that up other than generalities. My mythical graduate transfer QB might win one (or two) more games than Stanley because of his greater experience level based on those same generalities. It is riskier to start an inexperienced QB and possibly degrade a pretty loaded team's potential record in my opinion. So "ground" Wiegers and Stanley and let them compete for the 2018 starting slot by playing a transfer in 2017. A subset of the pattern is that the QB that starts the season after a QB controversy then has his best season. The controversies negatively impacted wins and two (three if you count Banks, a transfer) didn't get involved in controversies so it isn't the predominate factor in my theory.

Riskier than gambling every year that you'll find a magical graduate transfer to win games?

Why even recruit QBs then? If you were a high school quarterback would you sign with a school when you knew you'd see the field at best for one year?

I can't even process what you're suggesting here it's so out in left field. So... what you're saying Iowa should do is this:

-Bring in a transfer guy to play this year. Next year play Stanley for 1 year. Then, because Iowa QBs never have a good second year, bring in another graduate transfer, then another Iowa QB for a single year, and then another transfer and repeat ad infinitum.

How can you possibly not see how stupid and unsustainable this is? You're making ridiculous assumptions about finding graduate transfers first of all, and then how do you recruit guys to play in the "in between transfer years" when they know they'll be one and done? Aside from the quarterback thing that would absolutely kill morale on the rest of the team. Do you actually watch football?

Riskier than gambling every year that you'll find a magical graduate transfer to win games?..
I'm not implying that you do this every year. The system is currently broken. Until someone can actually figure out (or want to figure out) why then this is an option. It could be all circumstance, coaching, recruiting and any number of other less obvious factors or a combination of them. Those are root causes that need to be identified and corrected. The programs that are consistently successful have figured out how to mitigate those type of factors. Iowa under Ferentz has not @ the QB position. I'm pretty optimistic that 2017 will be a great year for the Hawkeyes if the interior DL and WRs step up or productive transfers are found for those positions. I'm just saying the Hawks might have a slightly better year w/ an experienced transfer QB if one could be convinced to come on board. I'm predicting that if Stanley is the outright starter for 2017 then he will have the most wins of his Iowa tenure in 2017. We will know if that prediction was correct about this time in 2019.
