One More Time, Wisconsin Travel Headaches

You will encounter several slowdowns on US 151 between Mineral Point and Barneveld. These are relatively quick and shouldn't slow you down too much.

The real headache is on the SW side of Madison, in Fitchburg. Big time delay on a game day. Avoid this if you can, especially if coming up close to game time.

Your best bet would be to take exit 79 in Verona, turn right, than immediately left onto County M. Take M to County D (the stoplight) and turn left again. County D will eventually turn into Fish Hatchery Rd., cross over the Beltline, merge with Park, and by that time you will be close to where you need to be.

You will have the same headache leaving Madison as well. Avoid it if you can. It's a mess both ways.

Three lanes of this stretch, in both directions, will naturally open on Monday, a major phase completed in what has been a six year project. But all the preparation of the Monday opening may make the work zone even more congested than normal. And on a game day with Iowa traffic coming in? No thanks!

Yep, it is always good to leave a good cushion of travel time and explore the work areas and closures before traveling to a time sensitive destination. But back in the day I remember getting caught in practically stopped traffic on I80 from Des MOines to Iowa City on the way to a game. But I could see well up the hill to an exit and the shoulder was open so I went up the shoulder. Some people were honking at me but what the hell I got to the exit, got off and went over to Hiway 6 and took some other roads for 20 miles then got back on I80. And as I approached that I80 exit I saw a few more cars following my lead. Sometimes you just run up behind new found trouble.
