ON SIDE KICK

20% to recover the onside kick

And if Iowa does not recover, then Iowa still needs to make 1 stop or the game is over. Same as if they do a normal kickoff.

The only difference if Iowa does make a stop is field position. With normal kickoff and Iowa stop, Iowa offense then starts its drive from it's own 40. With onside kick and Iowa stop, Iowa''s offense starts from it's own 20.

I say it's worth the risk to try the onside kick, with a big upside if Iowa recovers, and small downside if they don't recover.

Normally I say punt, but on this night we couldn't stop Mr. Taylor when it counted. I was yelling onside as well. I thought it gave us the best chance to win.

Makes total sense as well. If you can’t stop them at midfield then what difference does it make. Might as well try the onside kick.

Concussions are a terrible thing for all players and can affect the decision process. What seems so simple to most rational humans can be a mountain to climb for others.

One huge mountain that Kirk has to overcome is his pigheaded pride and stubbornness. I really wish he would just hang it up and move on and let the football program enter a new era. He has had his time and it’s time for a new era to begin.

Is there a risk? Sure, just look at stories programs like Nebraska, Notre Dame, and Michigan that have had their struggles. Their expectations are much higher than Iowa’s. They have much higher water marks.

It was painful yesterday for me to get ribbed from my brother in law who is a LSU fan. “When was the last time Iowa won a national title?” I looked it up and was surprised to see LSU has won three in the last decade.

Can’t wait to see what a Ohio State is going to do to his LSU team. It’s obvious to me that the SEC is down this year. Apparently they are trying to adopt the philosophy of the conference (used to be called the big eight but who knows what it is called now) that Iowa state is in. Forget about defense and just try to out score everyone. Now I wouldn’t mind if our offense would take that perspective. We play so conservative I could puke.

Let’s wait until we are two scores behind in the fourth quarter before we try to move the ball and score. There’s that evidence of brain damage from father and son rearing it’s ugly head again.

Well just sitting here early this morning in the Palm Beach airport waiting for our flight to Chicago then on to Salt Lake City. My brother in law got married on Friday which gave us an excuse to fly down and enjoy the beach. Enjoyed the sunny beach and not so much the SOB SEC fan, Lol. Yes I. Here’s for them because so was sick of Alabama winning every year.

No they aren't. I don't remember a linebacker crew this bad either. They are nonexistent. Nobody on defense was physical today. Taylor dragging multiple guys for 4-5 yards all game long.

Taylor squats 600 lbs at 5'11" and 214 lbs. That's without the momentum from running. Unless you can hit someone like that with a perfect double leg, which is really hard because of how fast and agile he is, one person cannot take him down. It's just physics. It's like trying to tackle a beer keg that's dodging you at 23 mph.

Yeah hindsight.. But Iowa couldn't stop their running game at all.. I had no reason to think they were going to be able to do it in this case, either. On side kick would've been my choice, I think.

It’s situational. Yesterday, whatever the odds of getting the onside kick are, it was 1 better than stopping Wisconsin on downs. Wisconsin owned the time of possession. Iowa’s defense was exhausted. Recall that Iowa just scored on a one play drive. The defense had to go right back out there. Too much to ask, and this was after Wisconsin had already dominated Iowa’s defense for most of the day. Once Taylor went for 7 yards on the first 1st down play, other than a turnover, Iowa’s goose was cooked. Onside kick was the play in that situation.

Waaaaaaayyyyyyyy higher statistical chance of a three and out than recovering an onside kick. And yes, it’s still way higher odds even against Jonathon Taylor.

Onside kicks are equivalent to fouling at the end of a basketball games. It almost never works.

Except for at Nebraska last year ... #stillnotoverit :)
