On Robinson & Concussions

I pretty much agree. I couldn't believe he got a carry after he got up from that play and was obviously not with it. Either the players/coaches didn't see it or ignored it. Also, I thought it was unnecessary to have a lot of other starters in there as well in the 4th.

It was the play where he was turned around and then hit helmet to helmet from the side of the head wasn't it? He looked really messed up when they showed his face after..def "got his bell rung"

I couldn't believe the guys in the huddle could not see he was not right. The TV camera zeroed in on him and he was out to lunch. Here's hoping everything is/will be OK for him.

A hit that can give a guy a concussion can happen at ANY point in a game. Furthermore, you need your team to always be prepped to go a full 60 minutes. I frankly have no problem with what the choices that the coaches made.

Furthermore, I think that part of it was intended to be a statement to the leaders of the team. Had Iowa not lost to Wisconsin ... particularly for some of the reasons that they lost ... I think that the coaches would have done things differently against MSU after jumping to such a big, early lead.

I think that fans aren't accounting for context here.

a statement to the leaders of the team?

lmao

I remember thinking, "OK, this is Rick and Adam's last series," at least 3 times. I couldn't believe how long they were both playing. Why? The only thing that can happen is bad.

No, not as in a statement that got after the starters ... but rather the statement was that they'd give them a longer leash ... and, even more so, it was about FINISHING! The coaches were giving them a chance to FINISH.

If they were giving them a chance to finish they would not have gone 3 runs and punt all 4th quarter.

There is no excuse for having ANY starters in the game in my opinion particularly when you are just handing the ball off and trying to run the clock down anyway(reverse pass from McNutt being excluded of course:rolleyes:). Get the 2nd team in there so they can work on the offense. Made no sense to me and I was pi$$ed when I saw Vandervelde rolling around on the ground in the 4th quarter with the game already won.

I'm not sure why we had our starters in as long as we did, especially when it was apparent we weren't going to try and run up the score/pad the stats. I know I was yelling at the TV every time I saw the starters out there during "run the clock down" mode. Vandervelde went down, and I was just hoping Stanzi wouldn't get injured. And now we find out ARob's got a concussion?! I suppose it's somewhat fortunate we have Indiana coming up, but what if it happened with jNW or tOSU up next?

There's a fine line between shutting down too soon and putting your starters at risk. And I think a lot of coaches have a tough time finding that balance. Hopefully Robinson can heal up and be good to go in two weeks or so.

Leaving Robinson in the game that late would be okay......if we still had Hampton and Wegher. When he's our ONLY proven back, you don't leave him in there in the 4th quarter when we're up 31 points. MSU has had magic all year, but a 31-point QUARTER? They didn't have that in them.

Yes, concussions can happen at any point in the game. But that doesn't mean they should just keep all the starters in. If it happens in the 2nd quarter, there was good reason for the player to be on the field. Up 31 in the 4th? Not so much. ESPECIALLY when he's the ONE player you need to have the bubblewrap on as much as possible.

+1

Can't believe the press didin't pursue this a bit further with O'Keefe or Ferentz after the game for their explanation......just doesn't make any sense especially in Robinson's case. I thought there were a couple non Ferentz-like decisions made on the field this day that were head scratchers. Anyone recall if the defense had started making some substitutions earlier in the 4th qtr.?

yes, and i couldn't believe that he got the ball that very next play. I was waiting for a player to signal to the staff to get Robinson out, as much as he was shaking his head and blinking his eyes. coaches can't see everything from the sideline, given how much is going on there and how robinson would blend in to the rest of the team in the huddle.

We were in a mind-meld Saturday, Sirhouseman. Was thinking exactly the same thing. And I was really afraid something was wrong with Adam after he got up from the hit that apparently was where he got his bell rung.

Jon, you're raising good questions about leaving Adam in that deep into a game that for all intents and purposes was over. I sense you're holding back just a bit in your criticism. But good job; would like to see some answers from the coaching staff.

Considering that the coaches very rarely leave the starters in during a blow-out, I'm still inclined to believe that there was a reason/context for the actions.

It's VERY easy for folks on the "outside" to second guess the coaches and/or players ... however, very few of us (fans) really know what's go on from the "inside."
