On incoming recruits...let's use some logic please.

1. If Lick is fired, I think it is extremely unlikely he winds up as a head coach next year in a major conference.

The point? Recruits if they are going to follow Lick are going to choose a mid major (if he coaches at all next year) over the Big 10?

2. Last time I checked, all four recruits have assets that can be utilized by any coach and under any system.

The point? While they may have signed on the bottom line for Lick, they were all considering other schools that played other systems.

3. No matter how much they loved Lick, if they didn't love the school, they would not have signed.

The point? It is still Iowa.

4. There are lots of great coaches, and lots of coaches who have great relationships with their players.

The point? Make a great hire and you have nothing to worry about. You have to make a great hire anyway at this point or risk the program being beyond repair.

The recruits for next year are not going to make or break any season. They are all good but not one of them is a game changer. My #1 priority for hiring a coach would be his recruiting ability. If he is a top shelf recruiter, then the chances he would actually want all 4 of these kids would be slim at best. If he's not a big time recruiter, say a Jacobson type, then all 4 of these kids will be at Iowa next year. I have no doubt in my mind.

The question that I have is, do we really want a group of four players that are good but not great?

If Pearl comes to Iowa, none of these kids come to Iowa.

For all of the BS SA subjected the Hawks to, one of the things that I found endearing was that in an interview with ESPN during the final four, four days after he was hired was that he had a plan and he went on national television and shared that plan for maintaining Mr. Davis's success and bringing the Hawks to the next level.

It is foolish to think that the incoming coach (if there is one) wouldn't have a plan in place for keeping the recruits in place. If Barta doesn't make his move as soon as his choice is out of the tourney, we are at a much greater risk of losing these kids...uncertainty is MUCH more unsettling than a new coach.

I have complete confidence that most or all of these recruits will be at Iowa.
If we hire the right guy, he will be able to re-recruit them. I do think almost any coach will want them, because by April,it is hard to fill more than 1-2 schollys for the fall semester. I want the new hire to sit down with them, sell them, and then go out and grab 1,or possibly 2 (if we have departures) quick perimeter guards, adding them to the 10-11 guys we will have next year, and maximize our talents, play a bigger rotation maybe, and maybe even talk a couple of kids into redshirting...make the tough calls right away,as next year is a throwaway year, but be ready to contend in year 2 with hopefully a Chasson Randle coming into the program, with Paige and Jok following in soon after....hit the grouond sprinting, not with a 5 year plan like lick.

Question - wasn't Dairese Gary coming to Iowa, was released from his scholarship, and then he followed Alford to NM? I agree that might not apply because Todd may not be a coach at another school next year (if he is not at Iowa), but it does happen. As many have said, many players choose the coach not the school.

Lick will coach somewhere next year.

Doesn't anybody remember what he did when he left Butler? According to all published reports he told the Butler recruits to stay at Butler...I of course think this was BS and called it that way almost four years ago....He didn't recruit those kids, his assistant who is now the head coach at Butler DID and even if he WANTED them to follow him they weren't going to.

It is very typical for every recruit to follow his coach if said coach leaves before the season even if they have signed LOIs. The ADs will release the kids, the new coach will release our kids if they want out or the new coach doesn't want them.

Kids that are already on campus is anothe story. Very seldom are these kids unconditionally released to follow their coach. The university has invested money in their education, training, etc. Plus no university will self deplete their roster if they can avoid it.

Summary: Recruits get released, roster stays.

McDermott told the UNI kids to keep their commitment to UNI when he left for ISU. Egleseder was one of those kids. Calipari took some of his Memphis recruits to Kentucky and pushed some of the Kentucky players out. There have been different ways that these situations have been handled.

Lick wasn't fired by Butler, but I won't be surprised if he takes the same approach with his recruits here.

I'm not as sure as some that he'll be coaching anywhere next season. That may depend on what kind of public disclosure occurs about why he's not going to be here next season. In any event, if someone does hire Lick I doubt seriously that it will be a BCS conference school, and certainly not a BCS conference school in the Midwest.

I'm hopeful that we won't lose any of the recruits, but if we do, it won't be to follow Lick somewhere.

In addition, even if we do lose someone but we make the right kind of hire, the new coach will have the ability to go out and find a player or two in the Spring signing period who can fill in and help us. That's one of the areas in which Lick and his staff have been severely lacking.

There seems to be an upgrade in athleticism with this incoming class so I don't think style of play is going to scare them off or scare off a coach coming in, unless he brings a guy with him and trims someone from this roster or class to make room for "his prize guy"...12345 couldn't be more wrong in his post, but hey...we're used to that!

:p

Why would the incoming recruits be so in love with TL if his current and former players don't seem to connect with him?

Simple BB...they've not been around him like the on campus guys have...it's like Illinois recruits love them some Ron Zook, until they get to campus and realize he's not very good at winning or coaching.

I'm sure they have all lived very sheltered lives and TL has been able to keep them away from all the goings on the last couple of years in Hawkey country.

Kids see what they want to see and people put up fronts they want to have seen...sometimes the obvious isn't always what we see.

He gave them something no other coach did: a chance to play in the Big Ten. (ok, Ben could have gone to Northwestern)

Lick will be coaching next season....at Iowa.

Should he get fired, like FreddyBrown...I'm not sure he gets hired by anyone next season, but he probably will. It won't be a big time conference...likely a mid-major.

Yes, I'm sure all great coaches would feel just dandy about having a class totally absent. If Pearl came, he's not going to push an entire class away. And he's not got much time to get recruits of his own, and those who he could get probably wouldn't be as good as the guys we have coming in right now. So he would be busting his butt to keep them, IMO.

HawkeyeShane,

Lick HAS NOT connected with the players on the Iowa team. He has had a tremendous amount of players transfer out. Publicly his players have stated that they don't have a relationship with him but that their communication goes through the assistants.

Barta met with the Iowa players, in private, to discuss their coach. What do you think that implies? Nothing right?

There seems to be an upgrade in athleticism with this incoming class....That is what you said. Athleticism compared to whom? Lil Lick and Bawinkel? Making strides at a baby step level isn't going to get you an NCAA tournament birth. Have you watched any of the games in the past two days? No chance Iowa competes against any of these teams with this roster and the incoming players.

Lick is gone, it's just a matter of time at this point.

Really?

There are JUCOs and several top 100 players available right now that have not signed LOIs anywhere. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if a guy like Pearl could go out there and land one or two of these players. It takes one or two great players to make a HUGE difference.

If Lick is coaching at Iowa next year it is going to be without a couple of the players that are getting major minutes, that alone should tell anyone that Lick is gone.
