Omaha.com - Hawkeyes' new digs
show they're thinking big

Doesn't matter. ISu's filling in their south endzone. Soon, they'll have 61,000 fans. We're borked. Cyclone state.

How is it that journalists from Omaha give Iowa more coverage than the ones living in the state?

I can only speak for Central Iowa, but the media here is all-in with Iowa State now...have been ever since they came "this close" to having to cover a Conference USA program instead of a BCS school because they need Iowa State to have a stronger fanbase.

It used to be that they'd have to purposely split coverage of Iowa and Iowa State right down the middle or risk facing the wrath of Cyclone Area Code and its proclivity for boycotts...Nowadays they only cover Iowa when they have to and are quick to slap down any Hawk fans looking to make jokes or run smack at the Clones, while giggling like girls at a slumber party whenever a Cyclone fan comes up with a Tavern Hok comment.

I don't doubt what you say is true, but that's stupid. I guarantee that there are more Iowa fans than ISU. When I was a kid the Des Moines Register was great. I would wait for the Big Peach. Now it's a joke that I wouldn't use to wipe my butt. I don't live in central Iowa but every time when I'm driving through and tune in to the radio I'm disgusted with the poor quality of "Talent." Anybody who is working in the Iowa media is there because they suck too much to have a good job. They get paid peanuts and don't deserve that, thank goodness we live in the age of the internet so they are irrelevant.

Because all of the good media coverage comes from the internet.

I agree that there seems to be an incessant effort to split coverage down the middle 50/50, which bothers me, but there is no Cyclone lean. In fact, I'd say there is a slight Hawk lean...at least in the morning on KXNO.

You're right about The Morning Rush. They're both Hawkeye fans and took over for Miller on SoundOff last year, but other than that, it's there. It's been a subtle change that I've picked up on while driving the countryside in Central Iowa day after day and keeping it locked on the local shows since the old days of The Jock. Admittedly, I've never gone "all-in" like some Cyclone fans reportedly used to do and documented things like article length or page placement in the paper or number of interviews and/or length of them on radio and TV...I'm not THAT nutty...yet. It just seems to be there and growing and it seems to have started with that giant sigh of relief after conference re-alignment when the Big12 avoided total implosion.

I actually don't blame them for doing it. For years people have said things like "This state isn't big enough to have TWO high level/successful schools in D-I athletics!"...I always disagreed because they're in different conferences and both recruit a LOT of out of state kids anyway. The only real difference was commitment from the school and the fanbase. But an evening out of the fanbases (or as close as they can get it) is what's going to keep Iowa State moving forward financially, whereas Iowa has had a head start on it since the Hayden, Lute and Gable eras. And while Cyclone fans have been quick to try and make Iowa fans who didn't go to Iowa feel guilty for rooting for them, Pollard has been campaigning to create Tavern Clones since he's been in Ames...and I hope it pays off for Iowa State. I just don't like living in it while it's happening, as a Central Iowa Hawkeye fan.

A final thought: Iowa State has been selling nothing but hope since Pollard has been there, with no real results other than the homerun that Fred Hoiberg has turned out to be. You can't keep doing that year after mediocre year if there's not some help from the media shoveling fluff all over the place. It's ESPN 101 in regards to turning the masses in their favor.

Edit: By the way, Iowa has helped this happen. The Lickliter Era...Rhabdo...etc. It all adds to the ease of transition with casual fans.

But they have perfected their entrance to the game...with that tornado thing they do. It's impressive. If they ever figure out a way to move that kind of magic to the field. They could win more games.

If you build it they will come. I was home visiting family in Belle Plaine for a few days and decided to run up to Dyersville just for fun to say I've been there. Unfortunately I had to fly back to Atlanta, Georgia the Saturday when Keven and several of the other stars from the movie were there. Do we have a cornfield near the Staduim. Be cool to see Nile or Norm come walking out of that corn. God bless their memories and I am grateful for the great people they were. :)

Games aren't won on the field. They're won in the tunnel, with sirens and smoke machines, and huge scoreboards in ugly stadiums.

THAT'S ANOTHER CYCLONE......FIRST DOWN!

Its crazy...I live in Omaha and most nebby fans still view us that way, even though we absolutely manhandled them in there house. I not only want the Hawks to beat them again, I want to beat them up...again.

And we did too, we beat them up. Went into their back yard and beat their *** with their mom watching.
