Official visit?

Can someone explain the difference between an official visit and an unofficial? And why recruits are more likely to commit to a school they have "officially" visited? Just interested after reading the posts regarding Henderson. I am just in the dark about how these visits work.

I know just a little about it, but on an "official visit" travel, lodging, food, etc, are paid for the recruit. For an "unofficial visit", the recruit is required to pick up the tab.

Which is why I am not that concerned about Henderson. This kid wants an all expense paid trip to Florida in the winter. He is from Minnesota. He will get the same trip every year if he is a Hawk.

As has been said, an official visit is paid for by the universities...each recruit can take up to 5 official visits (one per school) but he can take as many unofficial visits as he wants since it's on his dime. A recruit is more likely to verbal on an official visit because those visits are usually to the schools at the top of his list. As is the case with Seantrel and Harrison Barnes when it came to ISU, there was no need to take an official visit due to the proximity of the university to their homes...so since you only get 5, why waste one!?!?
