Offensive Line Performance

I think you have to be very pleased with the way Ferguson, Kallenberger and the Pauson's played. NIU wasn't a roll over type of first game and they had experience on defense...especially the line. Sutton was pretty much a non-factor...he should keep to himself about his greatness, until they get to the MAC conference games.

I'd have to go watch the replay again, but I watched Kallenberger when he was in there. He struggled a few times, but this dude is going to be really freaking good. If you watch a couple of Toren's good runs, he does a few combination blocks with the TE to get the DE moving out, then comes back to the tackle to create the crease for Young. it was beautiful execution. It was also very clear that NIU was done late third quarter. It was obvious they were physically spent. Iowa was rotating the guards and the tackles and our guys looked fresh. Banwart looked really good too...and Landon Paulson saw time too.

With Alaric and Tristan back this week...and here for at least one more year...I wonder if Kallenberger gets moved inside to guard at some point. This kid has alot of talent. The bottom line is that an injury on the OL, isn't going to see the drop off in past years. Nice job on recruiting if you ask me.

I have to agree, I thought they performed pretty well. Especially when you consider they were missing their two best players. If I am correct, NIU returned all five starters from their D-Line and was very solid against the run last year. I know they are a MAC team but I still give our O-Line props for the job they did. #15 was more or less silenced.

I also agree on your comments about the depth of the unit. While that was a concern in fall camp, maybe it will end up being a strength.

I have not had a chance to watch again but my impression from the game was that I thought the O-line moved more athletically, and I also thought the backs hit the holes very nicely. I cannot remember how many penalties the line had. I know the one big hold was against Fant. I think from years past this first game was much cleaner than some of the previous first games from an o-line stand-point

I think the OL had only one penalty, I believe the TEs had 2 or 3. Overall, I was quite impressed considering the new faces. Stanley had plenty of time and they opened up some decent holes against a decent DL.

I think the O Line played well. Let’s see how we fare with competition a little better this week
