Offensive Line in 2017

Every one of those guys is back next year...so the running game is going to be very good. If someone can improve the pass protection...it's going to be a very good offensive football team...if Vandenburg comes back and someone else steps up at WR. Fant is going to be special at TE. He is so quick out of his break...he gets separation immediately from LB's. I would love to see us go find another receiver via the JC route, ala Powell, for next year. A playmaker outside with speed would be a godsend.

This offensive line is going to be big, physical, deep, and experienced heading into next year. Honestly, I can't remember a time when we had this experienced a group coming back in one year. Losing Croston, but there's seven guys that have solid experience coming back. If they improve in pass protection...it's going to be fun to watch. Let's hope our freshman QB continues to improve. The offense should be pretty damn good, as it all starts up front.

I think pass pro is a big concern. It wasn't good all season. I also think, as others have pointed out, that we need to find a true left tackle. We've been playing guards at LT. My hope is that Alaric Jackson can step in. At 6'-7" (he should be 300 lbs by the time next season hits), he could compete for a spot.

Our running should be good.

Well, considering that some people in the media appear to think that Iowa's OL is anywhere from #1 to in the top 20 OLs in the country, so they better be pretty freaking good.

Yes, this will be an exceptional offensive line. That's right 7 players who started back, all the first 5 started a majority of the season. They have both of the Paulsens whp could push for a starting spot or provide experienced depth. I also look forward to seeing Alaric Jackson play. He was a big time recruit. Iowa got him over Michigan, Nebraska, Michigan State and many others. He's got the frame at 6'7" and the ability to be Iowa's next great tackle following Boone and Ike. A good back up in 2017, and a starter there after.

The pass protection would look better with a quarterback that doesn't hold on to the ball so long. Part of that is poor play design, part of it is CJ not working through his progression fast enough.

I agree that CJ was responsible for a good portion of the sacks late in the season. There are so many young players coming up and so many older players that played out of necessity early in their careers that we have a lot of options. If Kirk can actually put the 5 best players on the field (which I highly doubt) we could be really good.

It's more our WR's not getting open than it is CJ not going through his progressions quickly, enough. He did hold on to the ball too long, but it was to wait for WR's to get open. And, the pass pro was a sieve, at times, this season and inconsistent, at best. CJ played most the of season shell-shocked. Don't forget, he took some really hard blind-side hits early in the season. Several of them.

He had exactly 1.5 seconds to "hold" the ball against Michigan. How many times did you see a guy completely untouched or barely touch shoot through our protection...29 sacks...that's all I have to say. You weren't watching the same games I was. It's a combination of weak receivers and really poor protection from both the Oline and the backs. It was terrible. Putting this on CJ is crazy...sure...did he hold the ball at times and not throw it away soon enough, absolutely...he also knew that turning it over would kill this team. The reality was...how many times did you see him sit back there with plenty of time to throw against one of the good teams we played...(Michigan, Wisconsin)...hell, NW absolutely torched our Oline...one guy had 6 sacks or something like that.
