Offense

Tonight, I was delighted by the offensive play selection. Never thought I'd say that. Just delighted. Thrilled. Happy.

O line needs a lot of work but that another thread

Well when the Off Line is getting blitzed most plays it is hard to run and hard to protect.

I thought the Line did pretty well in the second half especially. they started pushing them around and running the ball better and CJ seemed to have more time to throw.

GD did a nice job calling screens and draws to counterpunch their blitzing a bit. Also, the fake end-around motion in the red zone in the first half was a nice move.

Need to replace Leshun Daniels with Mitchell. Daniels has no speed or side-step. 1-2 yards every play against a good d-line.

Iowa relied WAY too much on the outside dink and dunks to start, never really had a good flow for the run game.

If we get to the B1G Championship, OH St will destroy us.... Knock on wood

every other team in the big 10 west with the exception of Purdue is saying the same thing. It's literally the old big 12 north of the mid 2000's where the winner of the division was 7-5.

I thought we should have committed to the run game more. We did in the second half but I think this team should be a run oriented offense with the play action and CJs legs keeping the D off balance. Both our backs are averaging over 5 ypc...

I can say I was happy to see the TEs targeted, and catching, tonight. Daniels must not be 100% and if he is going to be nursing that injury for a while then someone else needs to step up and take some of the load off of Canzeri, who was fantastic again. CJB is showing a lot of toughness but the guards need protect him some more. Walsh needs to improve his timing on when to shed blocks as he got beat exactly the same way as last week on a delayed LB blitz. I was amazed at how much faster Pitt's D was as compared to last week. I was equally amazed at CJ's ability to dump it to the correct spot. His release is super quick when required. Great job by the O taking advantage of some really good defense by the Hawkeyes.

I doubt Daniels can even walk up a flight of stairs without grimacing right now. He was looking pretty damn solid against a full strength ISU until he got hurt. Cut him some slack. It shows you where the coaches think Mitchell is if they are playing a hobbled Daniels before him.

Yes, Daniels should have rested. Healthy he gets double the yardage he got last night. Looked like Canzeri last year playing injured, not himself. I would love to see Mitchell, guess it will have to wait. He needs some carries for the experience. Hopefully we have a less close game upcoming (like next week) and he can get some reps.

Best test for both O and D lines this year, those Pitt guys looked big, strong, and were well coached. All in all a good test and more preparations for the games to come. Even the dink and dunking under pressure was good for Beathard. Without injuries we can just continue to develop and improve game to game for who knows what at season end.
