OC BF needs to figure this passing game out

They just need to find some quick opening routes to hit some passes and back the other defense out of the 8-9 man lines. I know we all know this but it is imperative. What, the hawks had 260 yards of offense and I know it was mainly in qtrs 2-4. But still a few 2-3 step drops by QB and he was getting lit up.

Either you keep in blockers and send out few receivers or get Wadley and Butler both in as split backs and swing them out every play to loosen up the Dee. Fant had a chance to make things look good but dropped that ball on the hit.

Stanley made some good throws and he seems to be able to make the throws but every Dee is going to play 8 man in the box at least with gap assignment run the pass blitz. We know ISU will do it as that is the only way they have been in games with Iowa since KF got here.

Need to throw more on first downs and back off those safeties.

What other ways can they move the defense back.

I said it before, but I think it is worth repeating.
We ran play action in this one game more than we had all last season (not really, but close). We ran the TEs down the seams. We had TEs running crossing paterns. We completed a few intermediate plays go Easley.
Was it great, nope. But it is getting better. Fant holds on to a couple of those drops and things look better.

I still don't understand why Iowa no longer throws deep bombs down the sidelines. Throw it up into man coverage and see what happens. Worst case scenario it gets picked off for a 50 yard punt and at least it keeps the defense honest

Well, the last few years I would say it is a combo of poor protection and GD.
We'll see if this changes this year.

Brian clearly dusted off the KOK playbook. I liked the style but the execution was bad. Stanley was last in the Big10 in completions and yards this week. Not good considering we were playing a team who's defense was ranked 101st last year. We have to throw more than 15 times a game when teams stack the box. Good news is we have two more cupcakes to get it straightened out.

Wonder if run blocking would have been better with Daniels at center and Render at LG. Jackson as RSF had first start and Render had first start at center. Wonder if the pass blocking would have been better as well. Also, Stanley was the only QB in B1G this weekend that saw his first start in a game. Could be alibis, yet one game is small sample size.

I read that Render hadn't played center his entire time at Iowa until this camp. I can almost guaranteed we run the ball better with Daniels in there.

The offensive line is gong to need to improve next week.

ISU is going to stack the box and blitz most downs, daring Stanley to beat them thru the air. Plus, since Stanley has trouble holding on to the ball, and will be throwing the kitchen sink at him.

It is imperative Brian get some quick passes in to force ISU to back off.

spot on. this is why i was leary about WY. what we saw was inexperience: OC, QB, LT, C and WR. But the routes were much, much better as they were vertical. The crossing routes are a KOK staple and will get our WR's open as the season goes on. Yesterday, we established Fant as a legit double-team player. We build going forward.

They did try some quick passes, but Stanley and the receivers weren't on the same page. Can it be fixed? Yeah. By next week is the question. I guess we'll find out.

As for ISU, a lot of their sacks/pressures came from excellent coverage on the backend. Peavy just ran out of time to throw the ball. ISU has a good secondary. I will watch the ISU replay this week and focus on their line play and try and get a better feel.

Stanley's QBR was like 180, better than the NFL prospect on the other side but don't let me interrupt your cherry-picking. We won't need much more than 15-20 attempts a game. We had 19 attempts against Michigan last year which was our best win in a long time.

The play to Easley for the TD was a thing of beauty. Stanley had time to read it and let it develop. He read the deep safety and when he went with Fant he put it on the money to Easley who then did the rest. he also had a RB in the flat wide open too in case he didn't like what he saw downfield. They should come back to that a lot... Deep crossers make safeties have to make decisions and sometimes you'll get 2 chasing one guy leaving another running free.
I hope to see the RBs used in the passing game more wonder if that's something they are saving.
Also didn't see Brandon Smith out there. I wonder if they'd have been in the redzone more if he'd have made an appearance. He should be out jump ball receiver in those kind of spots. If you put the ball in a good spot he's either going to make the play or draw a PI flag.

Uh nice math. Stanley's QBR was a whopping 37.2 good for 101st place in the nation. Allen was at 39.9. What would Stanley's have been against our defense do you think? http://www.espn.com/ncf/qbr/_/page/3

Stanley had a better QB rating than Allen. That's what I meant obviously. It wouldn't have been any better if we'd thrown more, that's for sure. The key is effectiveness not quantity. The passes we attempt should help set-up the run and vice versa. I liked what I saw especially starting in the 2nd quarter when we started to establish the run. IMO, the only way we lose to ISU is if we try to pass too much and get too cute.
