Observations after the Michigan Game

Iowa got a win it needed and the defense was better, but going 6+ minutes without scoring and turning it over multiple times during that scoring drought put Michigan back in the game. Jok had a bad night. If he hits like he can that game is a 20 point win. He had some really bad turnovers. It wasn't a complete game, but it was a road win against a team trying to get into the tournament.

Tonight was undeniable proof that the only difference the last few weeks was Uthoff's shooting percentage.

Agree 100%. We go as JU goes. Let's keep in mind that Michigan had no one to guard him, they did not get into his space and are not a physical team. This was a good matchup to get him going again.

JU's shooting woes was the biggest issue down the stretch. Opponents had a number of long athletic guys that could either get physical with him, up in his space and make him uncomfortable. Jok getting hot for awhile offset it some but the bench scoring drop off hurt.

You need 3 scoring places to go places..

1 Uthoff
2 Jok
3 ?
3a Woody, MG, Sapp or
3b The bench or
3c A combination of 3a or 3b

When we were rolling this was the perfect formula because we had 3 every night. In our losing streak one of those 3 was not there and sometimes 2 of the 3 were missing.

Wanna see what it looks like if both Uthoff and Jok have a big night. Hopefully we get a few of these over the next few weeks.

Uthoff's shooting eye was back.
Guards played much better defense.

I'm more concerned about Jok's lack of hustle than his shooting.

No doubt. He doesnt seem to be very well condition especially for the position he plays. He was putting up much better effort couple months ago. Legs look like theyre stuck in quick sand. Made some silly turnovers and his attempts to the rim were pretty dreadful. I dont wanna here its a long season. Nba players much older show much better conditioning then he has.

Wonder is Joks asthma is causing him problems the last week or so?
Ah asthma, could see how that could hurt conditioning. Maybe had cold flu in system in last month, couple that with asthma and he could get behind.

If he was some how able to get to gesell fitness you could see his scoring go up a big notch.

Ding, ding, ding.....Since the Maryland game teams have gotten physical with Jok/Uthoff and have decided let anyone else beat them but those 2. As for Jok I do not worry about his confidence I think he is just sick. His shots have been short and offline; the turnovers are direct result of being sick, Jok will bounce back.

Michigan is a perfect opponent for Iowa, but a bad gauge to tell if Uthoff is "back" or not. The blueprint is out there on how to beat this team. JU moving forward will have to man up and fight through some stuff to get shots. He will have to figure out a way to get spacing to get his shot off. If he figures this out or gets matchups with teams that can't or won't make him work for shots then Iowa can do damage.

I still feel rebounding is an issue. I still see guys watching that damn ball instead of getting a body on someone...flat footed...my question is this. .Why keep Jok in there if he is deemed sick? I understand he's still reeling from the effects, but have him go shorter spurts, and try to keep him fresh that way. The bottom line is we need more people to pick up the slack. If Uthoff hits his average we only win by 2...from here on out more teams will limit JU so we really need to be sharper in other areas

The alternatives being what exactly? If he can give it a go.....you let him play.

Not to be negative but we've had big nights with them in the past and lost.Need everyone doing there part and we will be hard to beat.

I have to agree with this....I brought it up b/c there were several that use this as an excuse...we need him that's for sure, and someone brought up asthma...if true, I had no idea....We're limited...Mikey G is capable, Sapp had 12 pts last night....Michigan had no answer for JU, but others do & that's all I was trying to get at....our bench d/n seem to be the answer, again outscored 9-5.

^^ and total shooting by the whole team, cant win shooting 32 or 38% like in past games.

What concerned me, actually made me upset, is we had the starting lineup of 4 seniors and a junior on the floor when Mich started using the 1-3-1 trap zone or variant of that zone. What bothers me is the weak spots of that zone are down in the baseline corners and the players did not go there or get the ball there.

A lineup that experienced should have been able to handle that defense and actually burn that defense.

This rebounding thing is a head scratcher....

I know teams have to get back on defense due to teams busting out after a missed shot, yet....

I noticed at least 5 times yesterday if the Iowa shooter had just followed their shot, they would have easily had an offensive rebound.

Guess the transition game has made that obsolete?

I agree on the rebounding point. No way your team should be out-hustled on 50-50 rebounds. That's anticipation, hustle and positioning. Something you would expect more consistently from such an experienced team.

Here's how I see it from here on out with this team.

1. Must, must, must defend well. It all starts with this. That includes rebounding. Hey, sometimes the ball will bounce away and land in an opponents hands for an easy put back. It happens. Getting out-hustled, out-scrapped, out-thought to the rim is inexcusable for a team of such experience. This kind of effort extends to communicating and switching on perimeter defense. The Hawks have to be able to read what is happening to them faster and get guys switched and close out the other team's shooters. Give them credit when they knock them down, but Iowa is being soft on the perimeter and teams are taking advantage. Coach 'em up, Fran and crew!

2. The bench needs to come in and provide more help. Their effort is there and they can finish around the rim, but geez, how many shots has Dom and Ahmad missed near the rim lately. Nic and Christian gave them a boost in the IU game, but all those guys are good and should be like a second wave of hell to the opponents. I don't know if they are just not turning it loose, or what. They seem tight.

3. They need more starters to apply more pressure to the opponent, even if it's only a threat. It's like running the ball in football and gaining 3 yards. It's not sexy, but it keeps the opponents honest and defending you in a certain way, and will open things up. Wood and Gesell need to be those threats. Note, I am not saying they need to score more points. They need to seem like a threat to the other team to score more points. I love Wood's hustle, rebounding and selflessness. Sometimes, though, he needs to look for his shot, or at least be perceived as a threat to shoot. If he is in the low post with the ball in his hands, he needs to have the footwork to pivot and either ball or shot fake and take it to the rack or draw the defense enough that he can make a kickout pass to an open shooter. He's a good passer. The coaches need to identify how he's being defended and if they are playing him not be a shooter and sloughing off of him, then make them pay.

Gesell is another guy who does get assists, but could also look to be more of a threat to score, even if it just leads to more assists. I like it when he dribble drives and draws the opponents' bigs and then either takes a decent shot or kicks it out, or does a wrap around pass. How much more room would the other shooters have if Gesell could help draw the defense and then do something meaningful with the ball?

4. Too many empty offensive possessions lately. Whether turnovers, shot clock violations, or having to force a contested shot before the shot clock expires, the offense can become too east-west, which goes to point number 3 about Wood and Gesell, and even Clemmons, since he's a ball handler too.

5. Notice how I have not even mentioned Jared and Peter? That's because if we improve points 1-4 from here on out, we can survive some cold shooting stretches better, or won't have to rely on them too much, or we can stretch the opponent to the point where those two can get some more open looks.

6. Fran and Co. need to realize what a unique team this is, how much talent they have and how good they can be if they are all playing the right role, communicating and hustling. It's time for him and the assistants to help them dig deeper without getting tighter. Playing intense without being tense, as coaches have said to me in the past. It's also unique because of experience and make-up of this team. The coaches need to inspire the leaders to bring everyone's game to a new level and play together.

Go Hawks! You can do it.
