This week's football notebooks looks at attempts for the Iowa offense to get off to better starts, Brandon Snyder's return, the punting situation and more:

That's quite a quick recovery for Snyder. I still wonder if he should redshirt and keep the two full years of eligibility.

No possibility of medical RS?

I could be wrong but I have a feeling a medical redshirt for someone that has already burned a redshirt for development has to be someone who misses an entire season because they have to and there is no way for them to get back. I don't think they can just get the sixth year because someone got hurt for a few weeks, and they wanted to get in an entire season next year instead of seven games this year.

Any voluntary redshirt burns that year permanently.

In order to get a sixth year you have to prove that both situations were out of your control, such as an injury, coach leaving the program, etc.

Which is why I'm totally fine playing true freshman at injury-prone positions if they're at all ready to play. Anecdotally I'd say most multi-year starters on the OL and DL suffer some sort of injury in their careers--keep the redshirt in your back pocket if possible. I know not everyone is ready to play and that's fine, but look what it did for Matt Vandeberg.

Red shirting as a freshman likely cost Ike Boettger a shot at the NFL, and certainly did for Drew Ott. I'm not saying that they should have played as freshman if they weren't ready (team comes first), but I am saying that the NCAA rule is illogical and should be changed so that kids have 6 years to play 4. But then this is the NCAA we're talking about here and that would make way too much sense.

We forget that BF is a green offensive coordinator - so is Stanley who just made his 4th start as a college football player. I'm not surprised that it took them awhile to adjust to PSU's approach.

They will both improve

It's certainly understandable that Stanley will struggle sometimes, but there's absolutely no excuse for Brian's performance the first 2 1/2 quarters of the Penn St game. Sorry, there's just not.

After watching the game again. Most of the early drives ended because of bad execution on passing plays.

I think the offensive line will gradually improve as well. The offense has generally been better in the second half of games. Some of this is size, conditioning and depth wearing out opponents. Much of it is better execution and play calling. There is real hope that things will come together in time for a win. There aren't going to be any guarantees with this team. It will be one game at a time.

You mean the 6 dropped passes that he personally had? Or the missed blocking assignments on the blitz that would have sprung Akrum any number of times? Or the consistent pass calls on first down? Yeah, I agree....that performance was awful!!
